A celebration of humble fish and artisanal fishing in the seaside village of San Giorgio

Just steps from the sea, in the Brigantino area of the village of San Giorgio, a hamlet of Gioiosa Marea (Messina province, Sicily), the Fish Festival takes place every summer. With the evocative subtitle "...Between history, flavors and the Sicilian sea," this event was created to honor local fishermen, the maritime traditions of this small village, and the most authentic flavors of the Sicilian Tyrrhenian coast.
The heart of the festival is not high-end cuisine, but rather the so-called pesce povero: the less noble, more affordable species that artisanal fishing boats from the Nebrodi coast bring to shore daily. The event aims to highlight this resource by promoting conscious consumption and small-scale, sustainable fishing. For this reason, alongside the food tastings, there is a thematic seminar dedicated to sustainable nutrition and marine opportunities, featuring professors, consumer representatives, and local fishermen.
Following the cultural portion, the evening kicks off in the dining area, where visitors can sample the festival's signature dishes: pasta with squid sauce and mixed fried fish, paired with local wines. Afterward, live music turns the promenade into a lively village party that continues late into the night. The most anticipated moment, now a true tradition, is the midnight swim in the crystal-clear waters of San Giorgio—a playful, collective gesture that brings the evening to a close.
The Fish Festival is organized by Pro Loco San Giorgio with the support of the Municipality of Gioiosa Marea and the contribution of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry. It is an event deeply rooted in the village's identity, successfully blending gastronomy, culture, and social life in one of the most characteristic seaside locations in the Nebrodi area, between Capo d'Orlando and Patti.
The dates for the 2026 edition of the San Giorgio Fish Festival have not yet been announced. Traditionally, the festival is held in August in the village of San Giorgio (hamlet of Gioiosa Marea, ME), featuring tastings of humble fish, a seminar on sustainable fishing, live music, and the midnight swim. The detailed program will be published by Pro Loco San Giorgio in the weeks leading up to the event.
