A widespread festival of culture, music, theatre, and cinema across Valdera and the Lower Valdarno
Filo d'identità is a widespread cultural festival that every summer stitches together four towns in the territory between the provinces of Pisa and Florence: Montopoli in Val d'Arno, Fucecchio, San Miniato, and Pontedera. Created to explore contemporary themes through literature and the arts, it is organized by Arci Valdarno Inferiore in collaboration with Arci Valdera, under the artistic direction of Kendra Fiumanò and Stefano Colli. The event is supported by the Tuscany Region (Giovanisì project), the four involved municipalities, Unicoop Firenze, and the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di San Miniato.
The festival weaves together meetings, performances, concerts, cinema, and book presentations in a unique journey dedicated to dialogue, inclusion, and reflection on current events. Each edition addresses major contemporary themes: body positivity, new forms of family, end-of-life issues, gender identity, and historical memory. The strength of Filo d'identità lies in the active role of young people: many volunteers under 35 are not just spectators, but active participants in building the program.
In the municipality of Montopoli in Val d'Arno, the heart of the festival beats in Piazza San Matteo, at Palazzo Guicciardini, and in the Bosco di Montopoli, a natural setting that hosts readings, performances, and concerts under the stars. The meetings range from theatrical monologues to singer-songwriter concerts, and from literary presentations to debates with journalists and writers, in an informal and participatory atmosphere that has become a much-anticipated fixture of the Tuscan summer.
Filo d'identità is a travelling event that enhances the dialogue between Valdera and the Lower Valdarno, two areas of Tuscany linked by the history of leather and the culture of work. Most events are free to attend, with a few exceptions for film screenings. For those visiting the area, it is an opportunity to discover villages, squares, and cultural spaces in the territory amidst an atmosphere of celebration and collective reflection.
The fifth edition of Filo d'identità takes place from July 6 to 12, 2026, with events in Montopoli in Val d'Arno concentrated between July 10 and 12 in Piazza San Matteo, at Palazzo Guicciardini, and in the Bosco di Montopoli, plus a closing event on July 14. The festival weaves together meetings, performances, concerts, cinema, and book presentations around the themes of body positivity, new forms of family, end-of-life issues, historical memory, and the legacies of the Risorgimento.
For the first time, the festival welcomes an international guest, the French writer Hélène Giannecchini. Among the more than thirty announced guests are Pif, BigMama, Mille, Giulia Mei, journalists Marianna Aprile and Valentina Petrini, and actor Francesco Centorame.
