The identity festival of the Friulian people, celebrating the birth of the Patria del Friuli
On April 3, 1077, the Patriarchal State of Friuli was born, one of the earliest forms of self-government in European history. Since that date, Friuli has derived the sense of its own identity, and the Fieste de Patrie dal Friûl is the collective celebration of this memory: a day dedicated to the Friulian language, culture, and the roots of a people. Each year the main festival is held in a different municipality, while initiatives multiply throughout the region — over one hundred and fifty, in more than eighty municipalities.
The 2026 edition, the forty-ninth, takes place between Artegna and Montenars, two municipalities in the Friulian foothills. An edition of strong symbolic value: it falls on the fiftieth anniversary of the 1976 earthquake, which struck these lands hard, and in memory of a rebirth that has become collective pride. The Friulian language — Marilenghe — is the protagonist of every moment, from the mass to the civil celebrations.
The program alternates solemn moments and conviviality: the flag-raising, the mass in Friulian, performances by folk groups, the civil celebration with the Friulian anthem performed live, and the communal lunch organized by Pro Montenars in Borgo Curminie. In the afternoon, a historical-archaeological walk in Artegna concludes the day. Everything is promoted by the two Municipalities with the support of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region and ARLeF, the Regional Agency for the Friulian Language.
Artegna, with its San Martino hill, and Montenars, a balcony overlooking the plain, are two municipalities in the foothills that have managed to rise again after the 1976 earthquake. Hosting the Fieste de Patrie dal Friûl here means uniting the celebration of Friulian identity with the memory of a community that has rebuilt itself.
The 49th edition of the Fieste de Patrie dal Friûl will take place on Sunday, April 12, 2026, between Artegna and Montenars. The festival falls in a symbolic year, the fiftieth since the 1976 earthquake, and 949 years after the founding of the Patriarchal State of Friuli (April 3, 1077).
The day alternates civil and religious celebrations entirely held in Marilenghe, performances by folk groups, and moments of conviviality, while throughout the region, about 150 initiatives will take place in over 80 municipalities.
