The ancient rural fair of Bussi sul Tirino, celebrating livestock, local flavors, and the memory of the tratturo
Some festivals tell the story of a region better than any history book. The Fieruccia in Bussi sul Tirino, in the province of Pescara, is one of them: a piece of collective memory that pulses to life every year at the Parco della Quercia Rossa, in that corner of Abruzzo once crossed by flocks and mule tracks along the ancient tratturo. It is no coincidence that the park is named after a great oak tree under which, according to tradition, shepherds and merchants would gather.
For generations, the Fieruccia was the most awaited open-air market for local farmers. Its structure followed the rhythms of rural life: livestock were bought and sold on the last Saturday of May, while tools, fabrics, and supplies for the season were purchased on the first Sunday of June. It was a time when shepherds, farmers, and artisans secured their livelihoods through bartering and traditional livestock trading, but also an opportunity to strengthen bonds of friendship and kinship.
With the arrival of new economic and social models, the fair disappeared during the 20th century. It was brought back to life by the tenacity of the Pro Loco of Bussi sul Tirino, which has once again made it one of the most cherished moments of the year for the entire community.
The contemporary edition combines tradition and conviviality. Along the Parco della Quercia Rossa, you will find farm animals, stalls selling tools and local crafts, and exhibitions dedicated to the region's typical products. Not to be missed are the culinary gatherings that evoke the flavors of the past: pecora alla callara (traditional mutton stew), porchetta, and plenty of wine and beer, served in a festive, popular atmosphere.
The Fieruccia is also an opportunity to discover Bussi sul Tirino, a village overlooking the clear Tirino river, dominated by its fortified noble palace and rich in landmarks such as the Benedictine church of Santa Maria di Cartignano. A day designed for adults and children, enthusiasts and the curious alike, combining the animals, flavors, and wisdom of Abruzzo's peasant civilization.
The Fieruccia 2026 in Bussi sul Tirino (PE) took place according to its traditional dual structure: the livestock market on the last Saturday of May, Saturday, May 30, and the great market for tools, crafts, and local products on the first Sunday of June, Sunday, June 7, 2026, both at the Parco della Quercia Rossa.
For the occasion, the Municipality, through ordinance no. 14 of May 28, 2026, ordered the closure of Via della Repubblica and Via Madonnina to traffic on June 7, from early morning until the afternoon, with consequent adjustments to bus stops in the center. The formula tested by the Pro Loco was confirmed: stalls of local products, local crafts, and the flavors of Abruzzese peasant cuisine.
The traditional livestock market returns to Parco della Quercia Rossa, evoking the ancient trade of farm animals along the sheep track.
The detailed program with the times of individual activities is distributed by the Pro Loco and the Municipality in the days preceding the event.
