Fiera di Sant'Andrea di Chiuro

A fair with over three centuries of history

In Chiuro, in the province of Sondrio, the Fiera di Sant'Andrea has its roots in a distant past: as early as 1688, the Magnifica Comunità di Chiuro referred to it as an "ancient fair" in a petition to the authorities. Over the centuries, it has become one of the most significant markets in Valtellina, a reference point for mountain communities that used it for supplies in preparation for winter.

Between tradition and winter provisions

Strategically held at the end of November, when farming families had the resources for supplies and livestock trading, the fair offered goods of all kinds: food, crafts, clothing, wooden household utensils, and copper items. A local saying attests to its importance in the life of the village: "S. Andrea ven debot, su sensa scarpi e sciablot", recalling the anticipation and, at the same time, the economic hardship of some families.

An event still alive today

Today, the Fiera di Sant'Andrea retains its charm as a traditional market: along Via IV Novembre and in the centre of Chiuro, stalls selling local products, crafts, and food are set up, creating an atmosphere that combines historical memory and village life. It remains one of the most cherished events in the autumn calendar of the province of Sondrio.
