The Nativity scene of the San Carlo contrada
The Living Nativity and Ancient Crafts is an event that the municipality of Faedo Valtellino, in the province of Sondrio, organizes every year in its historic contrada di San Carlo. The event evokes the sacredness of the Nativity, combining it with the representation of ancient crafts, in an alpine setting that revives the atmosphere of Valtellina of the past.
Among houses, courtyards, and cellars
The nativity scene seems to emerge from the daily life of the valleys: the houses, courtyards, and the old stable housing the Nativity come alive with costumed figures, lights, and scents. Visitors can enter the old "andet" (traditional Valtellina rooms) and cellars, rediscovering the gestures and environments of rare crafts. A market set up in the old cellars completes the tour, offering traditional specialities: fritters, biscuits, cupeta (a local nougat), mulled wine, and hot tea.
A Valtellina Christmas tradition
More than a simple representation, the Living Nativity of Faedo is a journey into the memory and identity of a small village in the province of Sondrio. The patron saint of the municipality is Saint Charles Borromeo, and the contrada bearing his name becomes the heart of an event that unites faith, tradition, and community during the holidays, in one of the most authentic corners of Valtellina.

The Living Nativity and Ancient Crafts returns in 2026 to Faedo Valtellino, during the Christmas period, in the historic San Carlo contrada.
As per tradition, the Municipality brings to life a path that combines the representation of the Nativity with ancient mountain crafts, with costumed figures, a market set up in the old cellars, and local specialities — fritters, biscuits, cupeta, mulled wine, and hot tea. The precise date of the edition will be confirmed on the sondrioevalmalenco.it portal from autumn onwards.
