The festival of handmade tortellino in the countryside of Cento
The Festival of the Typical Tortellino of Reno Centese is one of the most beloved food and wine festivals in the Ferrara plain. It takes place every year in May in the hamlet of Reno Centese, in the municipality of Cento, in the province of Ferrara, in that strip of Emilia-Romagna where hand-rolled pasta is still a daily ritual. Founded in 1987, the festival has become a regular event for thousands of gourmets who reach this corner of the Emilian countryside every spring.
The heart of the festival is the tortellino made entirely by hand by the village's volunteer cooks, who roll out the dough and close the tortellini one by one according to the traditional recipe. It is this patient, daily work that makes the difference compared to many other festivals: here, the tortellino is not an industrial product, but the result of a family tradition passed down from generation to generation.
Although tortellino is the true star, the festival's menu is rich and varied. It starts with appetizers, including croutons with Colonnata lard, those with friggione, and a platter of cured meats and cheeses with fried gnocchi. Among the first courses, in addition to the classic tortellino in broth, with cream, with ragù, and with truffle, the Gran Galà della Sagra and the Tris della Sagra stand out, offering tastings of more refined stuffed pastas such as green tortellini with pancetta and grana or pumpkin cappellacci. Traditional main courses, side dishes like friggione, and homemade desserts, from zuppa inglese to Ferrara's torta tenerina, are also available. A complete vegan menu and a menu designed for children are also provided.
Organized by the Polisportiva Reno Centese together with the Municipality of Cento, the festival is first and foremost a village celebration, where the proceeds support the activities of the association and the community. The atmosphere is that of conviviality and family typical of the best Emilian festivals, under the covered and uncovered stands of the sports field on Via della Posta. Given the turnout, booking is strongly recommended.
