The grand patronal feast of Lentini: faith, the silver fercolo, and the nocturnal nuri ritual
The Festival of the Holy Martyrs Alfio, Filadelfo, and Cirino is the most important religious and popular event in Lentini, located in the heart of the province of Syracuse, Sicily. For three days, from May 9th to 11th, the entire city gathers around its three patron saints: the brothers Alfio, Filadelfo, and Cirino, who, according to tradition, were martyred in Lentini in 253 AD during the persecutions of Decius. The festival is a profound blend of Christian devotion and deep-rooted Sicilian folklore, attracting thousands of faithful, returning emigrants, and visitors to the city.
According to tradition, Alfio, Filadelfo, and Cirino suffered martyrdom in the 3rd century. The rock-hewn church considered their prison and the Church of Maria Santissima della Fontana, where a spring of water believed to be miraculous flows, remain central sites of the cult today. The saints' relics arrived in Lentini on September 2, 1517, a date still commemorated every year. The most venerated treasure is the heart of Sant'Alfio, kept in a precious silver reliquary bust housed in the Mother Church, the ancient Ex-Cathedral.
The most evocative and defining moment is the ritual of the nuri: on the night of May 9th, devotees—barefoot and semi-naked, dressed only in white shorts and wearing a red sash—walk through the city streets carrying candles and flowers. It is a silent run that retraces the ancient path of the martyrs around the old walls, flanked by crowds. The streets are decorated with red drapes and filled with stalls selling citron soda and nougat, creating a unique atmosphere that fuses the sacred with the popular.
The day of triumph is May 10th, when the majestic silver fercolo—the vara—emerges from the churchyard, pushed by the devotees, and is welcomed by the crowd with the cry "first God and then the saints and long live the Holy Mothers". Thus begins the long procession through the streets of the center, accompanied by the festive sound of bells and fireworks. The silver statue of Sant'Alfio on his throne and the reliquary bust are carried on shoulders among the people who seek to touch them, along a route that touches the Church of Christ the King and concludes in the evening with a pyrotechnic display in the square.
On May 11th, the festival closes with the solemn Pontifical Mass presided over by the Archbishop of Syracuse in the Ex-Cathedral and the return of the fercolo to the Mother Church. For the city of Lentini and the entire south-eastern Sicily, the Sant'Alfio Festival is much more than a religious anniversary: it is a collective identity event that renews an ancient bond between the community and its patron saints every year.
The 2026 edition of the Festival of the Holy Martyrs Alfio, Filadelfo, and Cirino was held in Lentini from May 9th to 11th, confirming the usual three-day celebration format. As per tradition, the announcement was made on May 1st with the ringing of bells and firecrackers. On May 9th, the city experienced the evocative nuri ritual and the ancient nocturnal "holy tour"; on the 10th, the day of triumph, the silver fercolo emerged among the crowd for the long procession ending with a pyrotechnic show; on the 11th, the solemn Pontifical Mass closed the celebrations with the return of the fercolo to the Mother Church. Local press reported the usual atmosphere of faith and tradition, with red drapes on balconies and the streets of the center crowded with the faithful.
