Lampedusa's patronal feast blending faith, sea, and maritime tradition
Every year in September, the island of Lampedusa gathers around its patron saint: the Madonna di Porto Salvo, venerated as the guardian and protector of fishermen and sailors. The festival, deeply felt by the inhabitants of Lampedusa and Linosa (Province of Agrigento, Sicily), has roots in a devotion documented since 1843 and is today one of the most intense religious and popular celebrations of the Pelagie Islands.
The Madonna di Porto Salvo is closely linked to the island's life and work at sea. Tradition tells of a cave that served as a refuge for fishermen and travelers, and of a statue that remained intact during the bombings of the Second World War, an episode that further strengthened the community's faith. It is no coincidence that a small statue of the Madonna is also placed on the seabed near Cala Galera, a symbolic destination for those who live by the sea.
The festival does not end in a single day. Everything begins on the first Sunday of September, when the simulacrum leaves the sanctuary and is carried on the shoulders of fishermen in a long procession to the Mother Church, where it remains exposed to the veneration of the faithful until September 22nd, the day of the culmination. Throughout the month, solemn liturgies, moments of prayer, and initiatives linked to local products take place.
The heart of the celebration lies in the processions: in addition to the opening one, the statue travels through the town's streets and, most notably, performs an evocative procession at sea, accompanied by the island's fishing boats, before returning to the sanctuary after crossing the harbor amidst hymns and shouts in the local dialect. In the evening, devotion gives way to popular festivities with illuminations, food stalls, games in the square, a fish festival, shows, brass band concerts, and the inevitable fireworks over the harbor. An event that weaves together spirituality, history, and maritime culture, capable of attracting faithful, tourists, and visitors from all over Sicily to Lampedusa.
The 2026 edition of the Festival of Maria Santissima di Porto Salvo follows the traditional calendar: the statue will leave the sanctuary on the first Sunday of September to be carried in procession to the Mother Church, where it will remain exposed until September 22nd, the day of the patron saint of Lampedusa and Linosa.
As every year, three processions are expected, including the one at sea with fishing boats, as well as evenings of popular festivities with a fish festival, brass band concerts, shows, and fireworks.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition (mass times, sequence of processions, evening events) has not yet been published: it will be released by the Municipality of Lampedusa and Linosa and the parish in the weeks preceding the festival.
