The ancient rite of blessed bread between Fobello and Rimella, in the heart of Valmastallone
The Festival of Friendship, also known as the Bread Exchange, is one of the oldest and most cherished rites of the upper Valmastallone, the side valley of Valsesia that guards the villages of Fobello and Rimella, in the Province of Vercelli, Piedmont. Twice a year, the two communities meet to renew a pact of solidarity rooted in the distant past: during the days of the Ascension, the people of Fobello travel to Rimella to receive the blessed bread, while on Pentecost Sunday, the people of Rimella travel up to Fobello, where they are welcomed in the Parish Church of San Giacomo.
The precise origin of the custom is lost in time, but two stories compete for its memory. According to one legend, during a particularly harsh winter, supplies were scarce in Rimella and the inhabitants of Fobello helped their neighbors overcome the famine; the following year, when the people of Fobello found themselves in difficulty, the people of Rimella returned the gesture. A more plausible version suggests that after a dispute between the shepherds of the two neighboring villages, they decided to make peace by exchanging blessed bread twice a year, thus sealing a friendship destined to last for centuries.
The exchange of bread is not just a religious gesture: it is the symbol of a bond that has spanned generations, made of mutual aid, shared faith, and belonging to the same land. In a valley marked by depopulation, the festival takes on an even deeper value today, as an opportunity to meet, renew ancient relationships, and breathe new life into the traditions of Valmastallone.
On Pentecost Sunday in Fobello, the festival often intertwines with the Valmastallone Livestock Fair, an ancient event linked to the local rural culture and livestock farming. Market stalls, local products, and moments of conviviality accompany the religious rite, transforming the day into a true village festival that involves residents, vacationers, and visitors curious to discover an authentic and little-known side of Piedmont.
Participating in the Bread Exchange means immersing yourself in the soul of Valsesia, among its Alpine churches, traditional costumes, and the famous puncetto, the needle lace typical of the valley. For those looking for an experience far from mass tourism, the Festival of Friendship in Fobello is a precious opportunity to experience a living tradition that is still capable of uniting two communities in the name of bread and friendship.
