A tradition that unites two mountain communities

The Festival of Friendship, also known as the Bread Exchange, is one of the oldest and most cherished rites of the upper Valmastallone, the side valley of Valsesia that guards the villages of Fobello and Rimella, in the Province of Vercelli, Piedmont. Twice a year, the two communities meet to renew a pact of solidarity rooted in the distant past: during the days of the Ascension, the people of Fobello travel to Rimella to receive the blessed bread, while on Pentecost Sunday, the people of Rimella travel up to Fobello, where they are welcomed in the Parish Church of San Giacomo.

Origins: between legend and history

The precise origin of the custom is lost in time, but two stories compete for its memory. According to one legend, during a particularly harsh winter, supplies were scarce in Rimella and the inhabitants of Fobello helped their neighbors overcome the famine; the following year, when the people of Fobello found themselves in difficulty, the people of Rimella returned the gesture. A more plausible version suggests that after a dispute between the shepherds of the two neighboring villages, they decided to make peace by exchanging blessed bread twice a year, thus sealing a friendship destined to last for centuries.
