Great singer-songwriter music in a medieval fortress: the Carmignano stop of the Prato-based festival
The Festival delle Colline is one of the longest-running singer-songwriter music festivals in Tuscany. Established in the late 1970s, it is promoted by the Municipality of Poggio a Caiano in collaboration with the municipalities of Prato and Carmignano. Every summer, it winds through Medici villas, courtyards, libraries, and historic fortifications across the region. The artistic direction is led by Gianni Bianchi, while the organization is managed by laCoz srls. The festival has always focused on high-quality programming, blending big names in Italian music, international projects, and emerging artists, always in dialogue with the venues that host them.
Among the most beloved venues of the festival is the Rocca di Carmignano, in the Municipality of Carmignano, in the Province of Prato. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages: documented as early as the year 1000, the fortress was long contested between Florence, Pistoia, and Prato due to its strategic position on the Montalbano. Even today, its 14th-century defensive walls and bell tower dominate the village and the valley below. Attending a concert inside at dusk means experiencing music within history: the stage is set in a secluded, evocative space where the natural acoustics and the panorama of the Tuscan hills become an integral part of the show.
Carmignano is a hillside village just a few kilometres from Prato and Florence, nestled in the vineyards of the Montalbano. Beyond the Rocca, the area holds treasures such as the Visitation altarpiece by Pontormo in the Pieve di San Michele and the Etruscan archaeological park. An evening at the Festival delle Colline is the perfect opportunity to discover an authentic corner of Tuscany, blending music, history, and landscape.
The 47th edition of the Festival delle Colline takes place from July 10 to 21, 2026, spread across Poggio a Caiano, Prato, and Carmignano. The only Carmignano stop is scheduled for Friday, July 17, 2026, at the Rocca di Carmignano, featuring one of the most anticipated concerts of the lineup, with the characteristic evening start time to enjoy the sunset light over the Montalbano hills.
The Carmignano stop is part of the full festival lineup, which also includes concerts by L'Albero (July 10, Poggio a Caiano), Lato B (July 14, Poggio a Caiano), Lumiero (July 19, Prato), and Krano (July 21, Prato).
Gnut & D'Alessandro bring Dduje paravise to Carmignano, a journey through Neapolitan song featuring organetto, electronics, and voice, followed by an analog vinyl DJ set by Buzz Prato. All within the medieval setting of the Rocca at sunset.
The Rocca di Carmignano is located in the historic centre of the village, in the Province of Prato. By car: take the Prato Ovest or Firmola exit from the A11 motorway, then follow provincial roads towards Carmignano (parking is available near the centre, followed by a walk up to the Rocca). By train: arrive at the Carmignano-Comeana or Prato station, then continue by bus or car.
The festival's Carmignano concerts are generally ticketed, usually costing between 10 and 12 euros. Presale and reservations are available through the official website and the festival's social media channels.
Limited seating: booking in advance is highly recommended. Wear comfortable shoes for the walk up to the Rocca and bring a light jacket for the evening. Combine your visit with a tour of the village and a tasting of the local Carmignano DOCG wine.
