In Staranzano, science and art tell the story of water, from aquifers to ocean depths
On the edge of the Isonzo River delta, where land meets the Adriatic Sea, the Municipality of Staranzano (province of Gorizia) has created an event that makes the relationship between humans and water its central theme. The Festival dell'Acqua was born with a precise ambition: to unite the rigor of scientific research with the expressive power of contemporary art, following the ArtScience methodology, to foster awareness and wonder about one of the most crucial issues of our time.
For one week in May, the festival enlivens Staranzano and the Isontino area with over thirty events: scientific popularization and geopolitical analysis conferences, theatre performances, readings, concerts, exhibitions, installations by international artists, workshops for schools and families, and guided walking and cycling tours. The venues range from Piazza Dante Alighieri to Sala Peres, from Lido di Staranzano to Rosta di Sagrado, up to the Teatro Comunale of Gradisca d'Isonzo and the Idrovora Sacchetti, on a journey that invites discovery of the area's water landscape.
The 2026 edition inaugurates a three-year project structured in three directions — "Under" (2026), "Above" (2027), and "Beyond" (2028) — and turns the gaze downwards, towards what we cannot see: underground waters, karst caves, ocean floors, and marine depths. A journey into the invisible world of water that brings together scientists, artists, and the public. Due to the accessibility and quality of its guests, the Festival dell'Acqua has become a benchmark event for those seeking culture, environment, and education in Friuli Venezia Giulia.
The 2026 edition, the fourth, runs from May 18th to 24th on the theme "Under / Invisible Paths", dedicated to underground waters, karst caves, and ocean floors. It launches a three-year project ("Under" 2026, "Above" 2027, "Beyond" 2028) and offers over thirty events in various locations between Staranzano and the Isontino area.
The festival offers over thirty events spread over seven days across different venues (Piazza Dante Alighieri, Sala Peres, Lido di Staranzano, Rosta di Sagrado, Teatro Comunale di Gradisca d'Isonzo, Idrovora Sacchetti):
The detailed schedule with times and locations for each event is published on the official website acquafestival.it.
