A musical bridge between Africa, the Mediterranean, and Europe at Parco delle Cascine
The Festival au Désert Florence is one of the most original offerings of the Florentine Summer: an event that transforms the Parco delle Cascine, in the green heart of Florence, into a crossroads of sounds from the Sahara, Mali, the Mediterranean, and Europe. The evenings take place between the PARC Performing Arts Research Centre and the Ultravox space on the Prato della Tinaia, two venues that have become the primary reference points for world music in the Tuscan capital.
The festival's history is rooted in the legendary Festival au Désert of Timbuktu, which began in the sands of Mali as a grand gathering of Tuareg culture. Since 2010, thanks to the Fabbrica Europa Foundation, Florence has become one of its main European stages. Following the political-military crisis that forced the original festival to suspend its activities at home in 2012, the initiative transformed into an international "festival in exile" project. The Tuscan city ideally took up the mantle, continuing to give voice to nomadic creativity and cultural minorities.
The Festival au Désert is not just a live music festival. The program is multidisciplinary, pairing concerts with a series of meetings, talks, documentary screenings, and workshops that explore themes of the desert, nomadism, the musical traditions of Mali and Algeria, and the relationship between music and politics. Music thus becomes a powerful language through which to narrate intercultural dialogue between Africa and Europe, with special attention to voices often relegated to the margins.
The 2026 edition is spread over three days: July 3 with a screening and talk at PARC, July 8 with the Mali Blues project, and July 9 with a major concert evening at Ultravox. Announced guests include Savana Funk, Tuareg music ambassador Kader Tarhanine, and Malian artist Mamah Diabaté. Most events are free of charge, confirming the festival's popular and inclusive vocation.
Part of the rich Florentine Summer calendar, the Festival au Désert is a precious appointment for those in Florence and Tuscany seeking a summer filled with diverse sounds and encounters between peoples.
The 2026 edition of the Festival au Désert Florence is held on July 3, 8, and 9 at Parco delle Cascine, curated by the Fabbrica Europa Foundation. The program alternates between in-depth discussions and major concert evenings, confirming the multidisciplinary formula that blends music, cinema, and intercultural dialogue between Africa and Europe.
