Theatre, music, and star-studded performances on Sicily's oldest stage
The Tindari Festival is one of Sicily's longest-running and most prestigious cultural events. Founded in 1956, it takes place every summer in the extraordinary Ancient Theatre of Tindari, located within the Archaeological Park in the municipality of Patti (Province of Messina). Considered the oldest stage on the island still in use, this Greco-Roman theatre towers over the Gulf of Patti and the famous Marinello Lakes, offering spectators a backdrop that is unique in the world.
Under the artistic direction of Mario Incudine, the festival offers a rich calendar that weaves together classical and contemporary theatre, concerts, dance, performance art, contemporary circus, readings, and major events. Each edition attracts leading names from the national and international scene, alternating Greek tragedies, prose plays, musical evenings, and moments of social reflection.
While its heart lies in the Ancient Theatre of Tindari, the event extends to numerous municipalities in the Messina area and symbolic locations such as the historic centre of Patti, the Convent of San Francesco, the Roman Villa, and the beaches of the Tyrrhenian coast. This widespread dimension makes the festival a true narrative of culture, territory, and community, engaging both residents and tourists throughout the summer.
Tindari, the ancient Tyndaris founded by Greek colonists from Syracuse, is one of Sicily's most fascinating archaeological sites, also famous for the Sanctuary of the Black Madonna. Attending a show in its theatre means reliving the millennial tradition of classical performance in the very place where it was born, with the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Aeolian Islands as a natural backdrop.
Among the most anticipated events are the Tyndaris Prize, dedicated to figures who have distinguished themselves in the world of culture and civil society, the Night for Culture which enlivens the historic centre of Patti, and the Tindari Reads and Visible Legality sections, dedicated to literature and reflection on contemporary Sicily.
The 70th edition of the Tindari Festival, from July 3rd to August 30th, 2026, marks a historic milestone: seventy years of culture on Sicily's oldest stage. Under the artistic direction of Mario Incudine, the edition features 33 events, 14 national premieres, and 13 locations spread between the Ancient Theatre of Tindari, Patti, and various municipalities in the Messina area.
The central theme, "Abumanism — being, not being, perishing", is dedicated to Beniamino Joppolo (1906-1963), a playwright, novelist, painter, and avant-garde intellectual originally from Patti, on the centenary of his birth. The festival thus becomes a widespread narrative of culture, territory, and community.
