The stuffed bread and meatball festival in the Irpinian village of Salza Irpina
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every spring, the village of Salza Irpina, in the province of Avellino, dedicates a weekend to its most delicious emblem: the cuzzitiello cà porpetta. In the local Irpinian dialect, this refers to a chunk of crusty homemade bread, hollowed out and filled with meatballs in sauce—a classic street food born from peasant tradition. It is simple, hearty, and designed to be enjoyed on the go, between one conversation and the next.
The event takes place in the Via Tufello municipal amphitheatre, an open-air space that fills up for two days with food stalls, communal tables, and music. It is a village festival in the most authentic sense: no staged sets, just a small town in the Campanian Apennines rolling up its sleeves to welcome visitors from the surrounding areas.
The heart of the festival is the kitchen. Alongside the signature cuzzitiello with meatballs and friarielli, the stalls offer classics of the Irpinian table:
Prices remain intentionally affordable: people come here not for a tasting menu, but to sample plenty while spending little, just as the tradition of Irpinian food festivals dictates.
Next to the food stalls, the festival hosts an area reserved for exhibitors, hobbyists, and creatives, featuring stalls with handicrafts and handmade products. For visitors, it is a chance to discover the small-scale craftsmanship of the Campanian hinterland, while for local artisans, it is an opportunity to reach a wider audience arriving from across the province. The evenings are accompanied by music and entertainment, turning the amphitheatre into a vibrant open-air square.
The Festa rò Cuzzitiello cà Porpetta is not an isolated event; it is part of Salza Irpina's spring calendar, which in the same weeks features the Vampa a l'Angilo, with its bonfires linked to ancient folk customs, and the Asparagus Festival, dedicated to the asparagus of the Irpinian Apennines. Together, these three events mark the village's awakening after winter.
The festival is organized by the Comitato Festa Maria SS. delle Grazie, in collaboration with the Pro Loco Ciao Salza and under the patronage of the Municipality of Salza Irpina. The link with the Marian festival committee is far from formal: in Irpinia, brotherhoods and festival committees are often the ones keeping the town's civil calendar alive, funding religious events through food festivals and vice versa.
With just over seven hundred inhabitants and sitting at an altitude of 547 metres, Salza Irpina is one of the smallest municipalities in the province of Avellino, in the heart of inland Campania, just a short distance from the provincial capital. The town belongs to the Terminio Cervialto Mountain Community and is located in a land famous for its white wines and mountain gastronomy—rich in chestnuts, porcini mushrooms, and seasonal vegetables—which returns punctually in the festivals that mark the year.
Visiting for the festival also means travelling through a landscape of cultivated hills and woods, close to the great food and wine routes of Irpinia. It is the perfect occasion for a day trip, perhaps combining a meal with a stroll through the historic centre.
No official dates have been released yet for the 2026 edition of the Festa rò Cuzzitiello cà Porpetta. However, the spring calendar of Salza Irpina, in the province of Avellino, remains active: in 2026, the village has confirmed the Asparagus Festival, a sign that the Comitato Festa Maria SS. delle Grazie and the Pro Loco Ciao Salza continue to manage the town's gastronomic events.
When the festival returns, the format is expected to remain the same: Via Tufello municipal amphitheatre, food stalls with cuzzitiello stuffed with meatballs and friarielli, an area reserved for exhibitors and creatives, music, and ample free parking. This page will be updated as soon as the organizers publish the programme.
Salza Irpina is easily reached by car from Avellino in about twenty minutes; the reference motorway exit is Avellino Est on the A16 Naples-Canosa. There are no direct rail connections: the nearest useful station is Avellino, from where you can continue by car or provincial bus lines.
Ample free parking is available in Via Vignole, Via Manfra, and Via Banda di Luccaro. Campers and coaches can park for free in the municipal gym car park on Via Francesco Manfra, about a hundred metres from the festival area.
Admission to the event is free: you only pay for what you consume at the food stalls, with dishes at popular prices. The municipal amphitheatre area is accessible to people with disabilities.
