The devotion to the patron saint of Campomaggiore
The Madonna del Carmine โ or Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel โ has been the patron saint of Campomaggiore since the village was founded, and her festival, on July 16th, is the most heartfelt moment of the year for the community. The devotion is rooted in the very history of the village: tradition tells that the Madonna saved the inhabitants from the landslide that destroyed the ancient settlement in 1885, having revealed the imminent catastrophe to some farmers. From that event, the new Campomaggiore was born, and the bond between the town and its patron saint was strengthened.
The celebrations begin with the novena starting on July 7th. On July 15th, the Ceri (Candles), church-shaped sculptures made by the different districts, parade through the town, a sign of the choral participation of the neighbourhoods. On July 16th, the liturgical day of the Virgin of Carmel, the solemn procession takes place through the village streets: the votive women follow the statue barefoot, singing the hymn to the Madonna in a gesture of deep devotion that moves even those attending for the first time.
Campomaggiore is famous for the ruins of its "City of Utopia", the 19th-century ideal settlement destroyed by the landslide, now a evocative site to visit. The patronal festival thus combines the religious dimension with the historical memory of the village, in a solemn and authentic atmosphere typical of the towns in the Province of Potenza. Amidst processions, illuminations, band music, and moments of conviviality, July 16th remains the event that best tells the soul of this small Lucanian community.
The 2026 calendar of celebrations follows the secular custom of the village. The novena begins on July 7th and spiritually prepares the community for the most important event. On July 15th, the districts parade the Ceri, church-shaped sculptures, while on July 16th, it culminates in the solemn procession with the barefoot votive women and the singing of the hymn to the Madonna del Carmelo.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival brings illuminations, music, and moments of gathering to the village, in an atmosphere that blends faith, tradition, and historical memory of the Campomaggiore community.
The detailed religious and civil program for the 2026 edition will be published by the Parish and the Municipality of Campomaggiore in the weeks preceding the festival.
