There is one day in Gallicchio when the entire village seems to hold its breath: it is July 16th, when the community honors the Madonna del Carmine, its patron saint. In this village of a few hundred inhabitants, perched on the heights of the middle Val d'Agri in the province of Potenza, the patronal festival is not just an appointment on the religious calendar: it is the moment when families reunite, when those who left for the North or abroad return home, and when popular faith becomes a collective embrace.

Between the sacred and a people's festival

The day opens with a solemn Mass in the parish church, followed by the procession that accompanies the statue of the Madonna del Carmine along the streets and alleys of the historic center. It is the emotional heart of the festival: amidst chants, prayers, and the participation of the confraternity, the procession winds through the village, stopping in front of houses, while balconies are adorned with drapes and embroidered blankets according to the ancient Lucanian custom.

As evening falls, devotion gives way to a people's festival: music and concerts in the main square, stalls, stands with typical dishes of Gallicchio's gastronomic tradition, and, in some editions, a fireworks display to close the day.
