The last Sunday of August at the mountain chapel of Miranda
The Festa di Santa Lucia is one of the most beloved events in Miranda (province of Isernia, Molise), a colorful village perched at over 800 meters above sea level. The focal point of the festival is the chapel of Santa Lucia, located on the mountains surrounding the town, offering a view that encompasses the entire Volturno Valley.
The main festival takes place on the last Sunday of August: at 12:00 PM, the solemn mass in honor of the patron saint of sight is celebrated on the stone altar next to the small church. Faithful and visitors ascend to the chapel and spend the entire day there, often with a packed lunch, enjoying the panorama and the atmosphere of celebration and contemplation.
Devotion to Santa Lucia accompanies the entire Mirandese summer: from the end of June until the third week of August, a Sunday evening mass is held in the small church every Sunday. In the week preceding the festival, the chapel is illuminated and is visible at night from the entire Volturno Valley, a luminous beacon announcing the event.
The Festa di Santa Lucia is part of the rich calendar of the Agosto Mirandese (Mirandese August), the period when the village comes alive with events. For the visitor, it is an opportunity to discover one of the most picturesque villages in the Molise hinterland at a time when it best expresses its identity.
The 2026 edition of the Festa di Santa Lucia confirms Miranda's tradition: on the last Sunday of August, the community ascends to the mountain chapel for the solemn mass at 12:00 PM on the stone altar. In the week prior, the small church is illuminated and visible from the entire Volturno Valley. The day is spent around the chapel, often with a packed lunch, in an atmosphere that blends faith and celebration.
On the preceding summer Sundays, evening mass at 7:00 PM in the small church. In the week before the festival, nighttime illumination of the chapel.
Miranda is located in the province of Isernia, a short distance from the provincial capital. By car, it is reached via the roads leading up to the village; the chapel of Santa Lucia is on the surrounding mountains and is accessible on foot or along the access roads indicated during the festival.
Main festival on the last Sunday of August, mass at 12:00 PM at the chapel.
Bring a packed lunch and comfortable shoes for the climb: many faithful spend the entire day in the area around the small church. The altitude makes the evenings cool even in mid-summer.
