The patron saint of Sant'Agapito

In the inland Molise region, in the province of Isernia, the village of Sant'Agapito — described as the gateway to the Matese mountains on the northwest side — celebrates its patron saint, Sant'Agapito Martire, in mid-August. The festa patronale (patronal festival), which culminates on August 17th and 18th, is the most important religious and popular event of the year for the community.

Procession, band, and fireworks

The celebrations follow the script of the great patronal festivals of Southern Italy: the solemn mass, the procession with the saint's effigy through the village streets, the brass band accompanying the ceremonies, and, to conclude, the fireworks display. The festival is part of the village's busy calendar of summer celebrations, which also includes the feast of San Rocco on August 16th and the Assumption on August 15th.

A community coming together

The feast of Sant'Agapito Martire is a time when the village comes together, also welcoming those who return for the summer holidays. Amidst faith, music, and conviviality, the celebrations renew the identity of this Molise community, which also preserves ancient artisanal traditions such as lace-making.
