The Festa delle Castagne is the autumn event in Miradolo Terme, a municipality in the province of Pavia, dedicated to the symbolic fruit of the season. Every year, in autumn, Piazza del Comune fills with aromas and flavours, in a sagra that celebrates the chestnut and the popular cuisine of the Bassa pavese.
Flavours of tradition
The food and wine stalls naturally offer chestnuts, but also a rich selection of local specialities: fried pumpkin, chestnut risotto, tripe, and 'patuna', a typical dessert made from chestnut flour. Genuine, seasonal cuisine that tells the story of the area's peasant roots.
The Greased Pole
The highlight and most spectacular attraction of the festival is the Greased Pole: a wooden pole over ten metres high along which the bravest compete in tests and climbs, in a popular game that draws crowds of onlookers and renews an ancient and fun tradition.
A village festival
Organised by the 'Amici di Miradolo' association, the Festa delle Castagne combines gastronomy, popular games, and convivial moments, with lunch by reservation and tastings in the square. More than just a simple sagra, it is an autumn ritual that brings the community of Miradolo Terme together around the flavours and traditions of the Bassa pavese.
Festa delle Castagne — edition 2026
The 2026 edition of the Festa delle Castagne returns to Miradolo Terme in autumn, following the tradition of holding it on the third Sunday of October. Piazza del Comune hosts food and wine stalls with typical seasonal flavours and specialities from the Bassa pavese region.
On the programme: chestnuts, fried pumpkin, chestnut risotto, tripe, and the typical 'patuna', as well as lunch by reservation. In the afternoon, the most anticipated attraction is the Greased Pole, a wooden pole over ten metres high, along which the bravest compete. The exact date will be confirmed by the organisers closer to the event.
