The re-enactment of the herds' return and the festival of typical products from the Alta Padovana region
The Festa della Transumanza takes place on the first Sunday of October in San Pietro in Gu, a municipality in the Alta Padovana region, province of Padua. The event re-enacts the ancient practice of transhumance, the return of livestock from the mountain pastures to the lowland stables, with the arrival of herds and a folkloristic parade accompanied by the sound of cowbells through the town streets.
Transhumance in the San Pietro in Gu area began in the early 1900s when numerous families from the Altopiano di Asiago settled in the municipality and started taking their herds to the summer pastures in their places of origin. For over twenty years, the municipal administration, with the Pro Loco Guadense, has organized the festival to keep this rural memory alive.
The day features an exhibition of typical products, crafts, and agricultural machinery, the specialty of spit-roasted ox prepared by the Pro Loco Guadense, hot air balloons, and activities for children. The town's museum hosts a documentary on transhumance, offering a deeper understanding of the history of this tradition that links San Pietro in Gu to the Venetian mountains.
