The ancient rite of transhumance in Bressanvido
In Bressanvido, a small town in the Vicenza plain, one of the oldest and most fascinating rites of Alpine civilization is revived every year between late September and early October: transhumance. The Festa della Transumanza (Transhumance Festival) is the heart of Transumando, an event that combines peasant tradition, agriculture, and gastronomy in an occasion that attracts over twenty thousand people.
The most exciting moment is the descent of the herd: about 600 head start from the Marcesina plateau and travel a long journey of several tens of kilometers, crossing the municipalities of the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni before descending into the plain and reaching Bressanvido. Transhumance is recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, a testament to the cultural value of this practice.
Other events revolve around transhumance: the Festival of Agriculture, with conferences, workshops, and show cooking dedicated to nutrition, well-being, and sustainability; the Great Festival of Latterie Vicentine, whose highlight is the cutting of the largest Asiago wheel in Italy (over 1000 kg of cheese, from 11,000 liters of milk); musical evenings at the Corte degli Ulivi organized by the Youth Council. The food stand offers the flavors of the Vicenza region.
Organized by the Pro Loco of Bressanvido together with the Youth Council and Latterie Vicentine, Transumando is a deeply identity-forming festival for the town and the entire province of Vicenza. Admission is free, and ample parking facilitates the arrival of many visitors.
The 2026 edition of Transumando is expected in Bressanvido between late September and early October, continuing the long tradition of the event. The descent of the herd from the Marcesina plateau with its approximately 600 head will return, at the heart of the Festa della Transumanza, accompanied by the Festival of Agriculture and the Great Festival of Latterie Vicentine with the cutting of the largest Asiago wheel in Italy. Musical evenings and the food stand will also be present. The detailed schedule will be communicated by the organizers closer to the event.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be announced by the Pro Loco of Bressanvido in the weeks preceding the event. The usual structure includes:
The descent of the herd from Marcesina and the cutting of the largest Asiago wheel in Italy.
