About Festa dei Vicoli

For one late-summer evening, the medieval village of Ponzano Romano, nestled in the Tiber Valley near the Sabina region, opens its alleys and squares for a widespread community festival. The event features five squares, five courses, live music echoing through every corner, and night excursions on the river aboard a Dragon Boat. This community-driven initiative, promoted by the Municipality and local associations, raises funds for the restoration of the Palazzo Abbaziale.

A village turned into a dining room and stage

The Festa dei Vicoli is the most cherished local festival in Ponzano Romano, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, Lazio, overlooking the Tiber Valley on the border of the Sabina region. For one late-summer night, the historic center undergoes a transformation: narrow streets, underpasses, and small squares—usually known only to residents—fill with tables, lights, and chatter, as each piazza becomes a stop on a continuous gastronomic journey.

Five squares, one unique menu

The formula that has made this festival so recognizable is simple and effective: a fixed-price menu spread throughout the village, with each course served in a different square. It begins with appetizers, continues with traditional Sabina and Lazio pasta dishes, followed by main courses, side dishes, and finally desserts. One square is dedicated to beer, cocktails, and dance music, while later in the evening, fried pizzas and crepes are served. Visitors don't stay seated in one spot; they walk, climb, and wander through the alleys, meeting the locals, turning dinner into a stroll through the village.

  • Piazza Vittorio Emanuele — appetizers, including beans and tomato bruschetta
  • Piazza d'Erbe — first courses (wild boar pappardelle, venison tonnarelli) and main courses
  • Piazza San Nicolò — side dishes
  • Largo Casa Amata — desserts and Dragon Boat area
  • Piazza dell'Oratorio — beer, cocktails, and dance music

The Tiber by night and the Dragon in the square

What sets the Festa dei Vicoli apart from many other summer festivals is its connection to the river. The «Il Polverino» Dragon Boat Club brings its boat into the village, displaying it at Largo Casa Amata alongside a film screening that tells the club's history and its environmental restoration activities along the Tiber Valley. In the evening, a night excursion on the Tiber is held aboard the Dragon Boat: a descent under the stars that, for many visitors, is the most memorable moment of the event. It is a detail that speaks volumes about Ponzano Romano, a town that has rediscovered part of its identity in the river, and about a group of athletes—mostly over 60—who have represented Italy in international competitions.

A festival with a purpose

The Festa dei Vicoli is more than just a convivial evening. The initiative, sponsored by the Municipality of Ponzano Romano and realized thanks to local associations—the «Giovani a una certa maniera» association, the Parish of S. Nicola da Bari, the Confraternity of San Sebastiano, the Hunters' Club, and the «Il Polverino» Dragon Boat Club, in collaboration with the Pro Loco of Ponzano Romano—was born as a fundraiser for the restoration of a section of the Palazzo Abbaziale, one of the historic buildings that define the village's skyline. In short, eating, dancing, and sailing also serve to give something back to the town.

Ponzano Romano and its surroundings

Those arriving for the festival will find a compact, well-preserved village with its medieval urban structure still clearly visible and open views over the Tiber plain. Nearby lies the Abbey of Sant'Andrea in Flumine, a monastic complex of great interest linked to the history of the territory, and the nearby Nazzano Tevere-Farfa Nature Reserve, a destination for birdwatching and riverside walks. A visit to the Festa dei Vicoli is easily combined with a day dedicated to the Sabina region and its olive groves.

A model of a popular festival

In a region like Lazio, rich in summer food festivals, Ponzano Romano has chosen a unique path: no large stages, no celebrities, but an entire village made available to visitors, with its inhabitants at the stoves and in the squares. It is the type of event where hospitality and atmosphere make the difference rather than the lineup, and where the added value is the ability to move freely among the illuminated alleys, with the music changing at every corner.

Festa dei Vicoli — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Festa dei Vicoli has not yet been officially announced. The event is traditionally held in the historic center of Ponzano Romano between late July and late August, featuring the gastronomic route spread across the village squares, live music, and the night excursion on the Tiber. The dates indicated here are tentative and should be verified with the Municipality or the Pro Loco.

2026 Edition: awaiting the announcement

At the moment, no official dates or program have been published for the 2026 edition of the Festa dei Vicoli in Ponzano Romano. The event is organized year by year by the Municipality together with the Pro Loco and local associations, and the calendar is usually released in the weeks preceding the event through municipal channels and the local Tiber Valley press.

Barring any changes, it is reasonable to expect the same formula as previous editions: a fixed-price menu distributed across five squares in the historic center, live music, a beer and cocktail area, and the night-time descent on the Tiber with the «Il Polverino» club's Dragon Boat. We recommend verifying the information before traveling.
