The Arbëresh festival of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in the Greek-Byzantine rite
San Paolo Albanese, in the Province of Potenza, is one of the smallest and most distinctive Arbëresh centres in Basilicata: a community of Albanian origin that has preserved its language, customs, and above all the Greek-Byzantine rite, part of the diocese (eparchy) of Lungro. It is in this extraordinary context that, every September 14th, the festival of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is celebrated, to which the Mother Church of the village is dedicated.
The most fascinating moment is the religious service in the Greek-Byzantine rite. The priest carries a tray in procession from the altar to the central door of the iconostasis, on which the cross rests on a bed of basil leaves. Basil is the aromatic herb of the King — the "Basileus" — the only herb that, according to tradition, grew on Calvary around the Cross when it was found. The rite commemorates this very discovery, in an atmosphere filled with chants, incense, and fragrance, making Croce e Basilico one of the most evocative celebrations in the Lucanian calendar.
In recent years, the religious festival has been enriched with a cultural dimension thanks to the A.M.A. — Appennino Mediterraneo Arbëresh project, which unites San Paolo Albanese, San Costantino Albanese, and Ginestra in the valorisation of the intangible cultural heritage of the Arbëresh communities. Concerts, performances, and tastings of traditional Arbëresh cuisine accompany the day, intertwining memory, music, and contemporaneity.
Croce e Basilico is much more than a religious festival: it is an act of safeguarding a precious and fragile identity. For the few inhabitants of San Paolo Albanese and for the Arbëresh scattered throughout Italy and the world, this event represents a deep connection with their Albanian roots and with the Byzantine tradition, preserved here for centuries.
On September 14, 2026, San Paolo Albanese renews the Croce e Basilico festival as part of the A.M.A. — Appennino Mediterraneo Arbëresh project. The day combines the solemn religious service in the Greek-Byzantine rite — with the cross carried in procession on a bed of basil — with cultural events: a concert and a tasting of traditional Arbëresh cuisine, to safeguard and enhance the intangible heritage of the community.
The program combines the religious rite with cultural offerings from the A.M.A. project:
The detailed program with times and guests will be released by the Municipality and the Appennino Foundation in the weeks preceding the event.
How to get there: San Paolo Albanese is located in the Sarmento valley, in the southern part of Basilicata, reachable by car from the SS653 Sinnica.
Admission: free and open to all.
Not to be missed: the service in the Greek-Byzantine rite in the Mother Church and the tasting of Arbëresh cuisine.
