Eight days of faith and celebration on Anglona hill, with the highlight on September 8th
The Solemn Celebrations in honor of the Madonna di Anglona represent the most important festival for Tursi and the entire Diocese of Tursi-Lagonegro. From September 1st to 8th, on the hill of Anglona — where the magnificent Sanctuary of Santa Maria Regina di Anglona stands, a Romanesque jewel from the 11th and 12th centuries — religious services, concerts, and fairs of all kinds take place.
The day of September 8th, the feast of the Nativity of Mary, is the culminating moment: thousands of faithful from all over the diocese ascend the hill to celebrate the patron saint with solemn masses, prayer vigils, songs, processions, and fireworks. The wooden statue, crowned Queen of Anglona in 1901 and proclaimed patron saint in 1946, is the object of ancient and profound devotion.
Alongside the religious program, the civil celebrations liven up the festival with concerts by well-known artists (in 2024, the group Matia Bazar performed), shows, markets, and fairs. Promoted by the Diocese of Tursi-Lagonegro with the support of the Municipality of Tursi, the celebrations are an opportunity to experience the Anglona sanctuary in all its suggestive beauty, immersed in the landscape of Ionian Basilicata.
