The living Nativity scene in the Pollino village

The Presepe Vivente di Noepoli (Living Nativity of Noepoli) is one of the most anticipated Christmas events in the upper Sarmento valley. Noepoli – in Arbëresh, Noja – is a small municipality in the Province of Potenza within the Pollino National Park, of ancient Arbëresh origin. During the holidays, its historic centre, with its narrow alleys, arches, and stone houses, becomes the natural setting for the re-enactment of the Nativity.

A journey of tradition and spirituality

The event is organised by the Ensamble Teatro Instabile and offers a journey rich in tradition and spirituality: along the village streets, costumed figures bring to life scenes of daily life from the past – ancient crafts, rural and artisan environments – culminating in the Holy Family in the cave. A path that blends the Gospel narrative with the memory of Arbëresh culture and Lucanian traditions.

The living Nativity scene is part of the broader Natale a Noja (Christmas in Noja) programme, which enlivens Noepoli throughout the holiday season with events, music, and activities for families. It is the ideal opportunity to discover an authentic Pollino village in winter, where the Christmas atmosphere can be felt amidst ancient stone, traditional culinary aromas, and village hospitality.
