Latronico celebrates its patron saint and the miracle of the Santa Manna
In Latronico, a town in the Pollino National Park in the province of Potenza, devotion to Sant'Egidio Abate is not mere worship: it is the very soul of the community. A proverb that the people of Latronico have repeated for generations says - "take it up with God Almighty, but leave Sant'Egidio alone" - testifying to how inseparable the patron saint is from local identity. The patronal festival on September 1st is the culmination of this bond.
Devotion to Sant'Egidio is fuelled by an extraordinary phenomenon, the Santa Manna: within the Pontifical Minor Basilica, a honey-coloured liquid emerges from an ancient fresco depicting a doe on one or more Fridays in March. According to popular tradition, the absence of the miracle heralds difficult times for the town: for this reason, the people of Latronico watch it with trepidation and deep faith.
The celebrations are preceded by the novena, particularly heartfelt days that spiritually prepare the faithful. On September 1st, the town experiences the religious aspect with a solemn Mass in the mother church and the procession that winds through the streets of the centre, and the civil aspect with the market, musical entertainment, and the engaging neighbourhood palio that pits the town's quarters against each other.
Promoted by the Parish of Sant'Egidio Abate together with the Municipality of Latronico, the festival is a moment of reunion for the entire community, including the many families of emigrants who return to their hometown precisely to honour the patron saint. It is an opportunity to rediscover the historic centre, the basilica, and the hospitality of a Lucanian village deeply connected to its traditions.
In 2026 too, on September 1st, Latronico will honour its patron saint Sant'Egidio Abate. The festival, preceded by the novena, will alternate religious moments - solemn Mass and procession - with civil events including the market, the neighbourhood palio between the quarters, and musical entertainment.
The detailed religious and civil program for the 2026 edition will be published by the Parish of Sant'Egidio Abate and the Municipality of Latronico in the days prior. The traditional structure includes:
Latronico (PZ) is reachable via the SS653 Sinnica. The Basilica of Sant'Egidio Abate is located in the historic centre.
