Two weeks of music, sports, and tradition in Valle Agricola, leading up to the Feast of San Rocco
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Ferragosto Valligiano is the highlight of the summer in Valle Agricola, a village of just over seven hundred residents perched 691 meters high in the heart of the Matese region, in the upper Caserta area. This is no one-night fair; it is a nearly two-week calendar of events that fills the village's central square every evening from the beginning of August until the 16th. It is the time of year when the village comes back to life, as families of emigrants return from cities in the North and abroad specifically for these days.
The nerve center of the event is Piazza XX Settembre, which serves as a theater, cinema, and dance floor throughout the Ferragosto Valligiano. The festival also extends to other key locations: the Sports Field, which hosts the five-a-side football tournament, and the Quercia area, dedicated to younger crowds and DJ sets. The formula, perfected over recent editions, alternates between different genres and audiences each night.
Ferragosto Valligiano brings together very different styles, and it is this variety that makes it popular throughout the valley:
The climax of the event is August 16th, the day Valle Agricola celebrates San Rocco, who is venerated in the village alongside San Nicandro. The day blends religious and civil celebrations: in the morning, the brass band marches through the village streets, following a ritual unchanged for generations, while the evening features the closing concert in the square. At midnight, the fireworks display officially brings the summer in the valley to a close. It is the most attended moment of the year, when the entire community gathers together.
The event is organized by the Pastoral Council of the local parish, which oversees the patronal aspects, in close collaboration with the Municipality of Valle Agricola. It is a strongly volunteer-driven event: local committees and young residents set up the stage, manage the evenings, and coordinate the sports tournament. Documented records of the festival date back to at least 2019, when its continuity was the subject of local public debate, a sign of how much the Ferragosto Valligiano is perceived as a heritage to be defended.
Visitors arriving for the festival discover one of the most authentic villages in inland Campania. Valle Agricola, in the province of Caserta, is located within the Matese Regional Park, a short distance from Lake Matese and the trails leading up to the Apennine peaks. The village, which was called Valle di Prata until 1863, preserves its stone urban layout, the Pandone Tower, and a mountain cuisine featuring cheeses, cured meats, mushrooms, and homemade pasta. An evening at the Ferragosto Valligiano is therefore the perfect opportunity to explore a side of Campania far removed from the most beaten coastal paths.
The event traditionally occupies the first half of August, starting in the first few days of the month and ending on August 16th, the feast of San Rocco. Exact dates and the program are usually released shortly before the event through the channels of the Municipality, the parish, and the local press of the upper Caserta area.
For the summer of 2026, the Ferragosto Valligiano in Valle Agricola has not yet been announced with official dates and a program. The established structure of the festival includes a start in the first days of August and a conclusion on August 16th, a day dedicated to San Rocco, but nothing is currently confirmed for this year.
Those planning a visit to the Caserta Matese area are invited to check for updates on the Municipality of Valle Agricola website and with the parish, which, together with the Pastoral Council, oversees the organization of the event.
By car: from Caserta, take the SS372 Telesina or the SS158 della Valle del Volturno until Alife/Ailano, then drive up the SP83 towards Valle Agricola (about 55 km, a good hour's drive). From Naples, it is about 100 km. Mountain roads are narrow and winding: it is best to arrive during daylight.
By train: the nearest useful station is Alife or Piedimonte Matese on the Alifana line; the final leg must be completed by car, as bus service to the Matese villages is limited on holidays.
Events in Piazza XX Settembre, including concerts, outdoor cinema, and the fireworks display, take place outdoors and have been free of charge in recent editions. Any food stands are pay-as-you-go.
Accommodation in Valle Agricola is limited to a few local establishments: it is advisable to look for farm stays and small guesthouses in the Caserta Matese area (Ailano, Prata Sannita, Piedimonte Matese, San Gregorio Matese) and book in advance, as the area is very popular in August.
