Pietra Ligure remembers the 1525 miracle with a procession and fireworks over the sea
In Pietra Ligure, in the Province of Savona, the Feast of the Miracle of Saint Nicholas is rooted in a historical-legendary event. In 1525, the city was struck by the plague; the inhabitants entrusted the keys of the town to a wooden icon of Saint Nicholas painted in 1494 and took refuge elsewhere. On the morning of July 8th, the bells rang spontaneously: the gathered population saw an old man in pontifical robes on the tower and noticed the imprint of a hand on the main bell, still visible today. The plague had ceased. Since then, every July 8th, Pietra Ligure thanks its patron saint.
The heart of the festival is the solemn procession, one of the most impressive in Liguria, in which dozens of Ligurian confraternities parade, accompanying the saint's ark, with the characteristic processional crucifixes. The original bells ring out, while the fair enlivens the city center, and there are moments of prayer, the recitation of the rosary, and the evocative blessing of the sea.
The day culminates in the evening with the fireworks display launched from the pier, illuminating the Gulf of Pietra Ligure. It is the grand finale of a festival that combines the religious, historical, and popular dimensions, attracting citizens and visitors from all over the Riviera each year. An event that tells the deepest soul of Pietra Ligure and its centuries-old bond with Saint Nicholas.
