Devotion to the physician martyrs in the heart of Manduria

In Manduria, a Messapian city in the province of Taranto, the Feast of the Holy Physician Saints Cosmas and Damian represents a moment of strong popular and religious identity. The twin brothers, physicians and martyrs of the 3rd century, are venerated as protectors of the sick and healthcare workers: tradition remembers them as the anargyroi, the saints who healed for free without ever accepting money. In Manduria, their cult is guarded by the Confraternity of the Holy Physician Saints and centers on the church of San Cosimo.
The festival opens with a long novena of preparation: for several days, usually in the evening, confreres and the faithful gather in prayer at the church of the Holy Physician Saints, followed by the celebration of Holy Mass entrusted to the priests of the Mandurian community. It is a journey of devotion that involves entire families and prepares the city for the solemn day.
The highlight is the main day, when in the morning the statues of the saints are carried in procession to the Mother Church for the solemn Mass, often presided over by prominent ecclesiastical authorities. In the afternoon, the sacred effigies travel through the main streets of the historic center in a long procession accompanied by local brass bands. The arrival in Piazza Garibaldi is greeted by the crowd with the exciting release of hot-air balloons, one of the most anticipated and characteristic gestures of the Mandurian festival.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival also features civil events: brass band concerts, musical performances, and, in past editions, fireworks that illuminate the sky over the historic center. The illuminations and market stalls complete an atmosphere of celebration that unites different generations around the square.
Located in the Municipality of Manduria, in the Province of Taranto, in the heart of the Salento area, the city is famous for its Messapian walls, the Plinian well, and the Primitivo di Manduria wine. The Feast of the Holy Physician Saints is part of this rich cultural heritage of Apulia, offering residents and visitors the opportunity to discover one of the most authentic devotional traditions in the region.
The festival is traditionally celebrated in the month of May. The official dates and the complete program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the organizers: it is recommended to follow the channels of the Confraternity and the parish for updates.
