The Vasto Marian cult in the heart of Ferragosto
The Feast of the Assumption is one of the most deeply rooted religious celebrations in the Vasto calendar. Every year, on Ferragosto (August 15th), the community of the town of Vasto, in the province of Chieti, gathers around the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in the historic center to honor the Virgin Mary assumed into heaven. The celebrations are organized by the Parish of Santa Maria Maggiore together with the local confraternities.
Santa Maria Assunta was long the patron saint of the city of Vasto. Her cult enjoyed not only popular but also official recognition: as early as the 16th century, her image, together with the municipal coat of arms, appeared on documents issued by the University (the ancient civic administration), a custom maintained at least until 1729. In 1827, the patronage passed to Saint Michael the Archangel, but the Feast of the Assumption never lost its prestige, remaining the most heartfelt event of the Vasto summer.
Chronicles tell of festivities that once began on August 1st and lasted for two weeks. Canon Diego Maciano documented as early as 1713 lively evenings at the Tower of Santa Maria, with drums, guitars, violins, and fireworks. A characteristic feature was the tradition of the palii: the University offered three banners—one red, one green, and one blue—as prizes for horse races and public games. After 1827, it was the horse races on the track that attracted visitors from neighboring towns and even from Molise, testifying to how deeply rooted the event was in the entire territory.
The contemporary festival preserves the devotional heart of the tradition. On the evening of the eve, August 14th, the solemn procession with the venerated statue of the Assumption takes place, accompanied by the faithful and the confraternities—including the Confraternita del Sacro Spino e del Gonfalone—amidst prayers and Marian hymns. On Ferragosto, solemn masses mark the day, culminating in the celebration presided over by the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Chieti-Vasto.
Set in the evocative historic center overlooking the gulf, the Feast of the Assumption is also an opportunity to discover Vasto and its heritage, from the Palazzo d'Avalos to the ancient streets of the village. In mid-August, the event is part of the rich Vasto summer calendar, featuring cultural events and appointments on the Vasto Marina seafront.
The 2026 Feast of the Assumption will be celebrated in Vasto on August 15th, the day of Ferragosto, at the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore. The event is confirmed as part of the city's summer program. According to established tradition, the procession with the statue of the Assumption accompanied by the confraternities will take place on the evening of the vigil, August 14th, while August 15th will be marked by solemn masses. The precise times of the celebrations and the name of the celebrant will be released by the Parish of Santa Maria Maggiore in the days leading up to the festival.
