About 'o Munacone Festival

Every first Tuesday of July, the Rione Sanità district in Naples comes to a standstill for 'o Munacone: the statue of Saint Vincent Ferrer leaves the Basilica of Santa Maria della Sanità to wind through narrow alleys adorned with drapes, flowers, and home altars. Rooted in a 1836 vow against cholera, the procession is the heart of a neighborhood celebration featuring days of theatre, sports, community gatherings, and a major free concert in Piazza Sanità—a popular, identity-driven patronal feast with free admission.

The 'o Munacone festival in the heart of Rione Sanità

In Rione Sanità, one of the most densely populated and layered districts of Naples, the feast of Saint Vincent Ferrer is far more than a religious observance: it is the moment the neighborhood defines and expresses itself. The Spanish Dominican saint, who lived between the 14th and 15th centuries, is known here by everyone as 'o Munacone (the big monk), a nickname inspired by the imposing size of his wooden statue and the black-and-white habit of his order. The votive image is housed in the Basilica of Santa Maria della Sanità, a 17th-century church built atop the Catacombs of San Gaudioso, known throughout the city as the "church of the Monacone".

A devotion born from a vow

Tradition holds that in 1836, while a cholera epidemic was ravaging Naples, the faithful of the district raised the statue of Saint Vincent and carried it in procession to invoke his protection. The contagion ceased, and since then, the ritual has been repeated every year as an act of thanksgiving on the first Tuesday of July; a second observance falls on April 5th, the day of the saint's death. Today, Saint Vincent Ferrer is one of the city's many co-patrons, but in Sanità, he is much more: he is the neighborhood's own saint, the one to whom families, workshops, and local youth entrust themselves.

The procession: the district dresses for the feast

In the days leading up to the statue's departure, alleys, buildings, and balconies are filled with drapes, flowers, lights, and small home altars. When the procession leaves the basilica and winds through Via della Sanità, Piazza Sanità, and the surrounding alleys, thousands of people lean out to accompany the saint. It is a collective ritual where social differences fade and generational bonds are renewed: a living intangible heritage made of gestures, songs, and family memory rather than monuments.

From liturgy to the stage in Piazza Sanità

Surrounding the devotional core, the Sanità community has built an increasingly rich civil and cultural program over the years, promoted by the Parish of Santa Maria della Sanità alongside local entities, including the San Gennaro Community Foundation and neighborhood associations. The calendar includes:

  • the solemn Holy Mass and the traditional procession of the statue;
  • theatrical performances in the basilica's cloister, often dedicated to the stories and "miracles" of the district;
  • sports tournaments and fundraising initiatives for youth spaces;
  • book presentations, screenings, and meetings on the history of Sanità;
  • the grand free concert in Piazza Sanità, which concludes the festivities.

The Patronal Feasts of the Municipality of Naples

For several years, the 'o Munacone festival has been included in the official program of Patronal Feasts promoted by the Department of Tourism and Productive Activities of the Municipality of Naples together with the Municipalities: a series of events that enhances the city's intangible heritage with dozens of free appointments distributed from June to October in all districts. For Sanità, the organization of the musical evening is entrusted to the Third Municipality, which brings artists of Neapolitan song to the square.

Naples, Campania, and a neighborhood that tells its story

Rione Sanità, in the capital of the province of Naples and the heart of Campania, is today one of the most interesting destinations for Neapolitan cultural tourism: the Catacombs of San Gennaro and San Gaudioso, the Palazzo dello Spagnolo, the Basilica of Santa Maria della Sanità, the artisan workshops, and the youth cooperatives that have restored life to the district. Experiencing the 'o Munacone festival here means seeing all of this in motion, amidst popular devotion, music, and street food.

Tips for visitors

The festival is completely free and takes place outdoors. On concert evenings, Piazza Sanità is very crowded: it is advisable to arrive well in advance, travel on foot or by public transport, and follow the instructions of the volunteers. During major events, the Municipality may issue specific safety ordinances, such as the ban on the sale of drinks in rigid containers in the affected area.
