The week-long feast of Sarsina's patron saint, in Piazza Plauto
The Feast of Saint Vicinius is the most cherished event of the summer in Sarsina, a small municipality in the Province of Forlì-Cesena nestled in the Savio Valley, in Emilia-Romagna. For seven days, from August 22nd to 28th, the evocative Piazza Tito Maccio Plauto — named after the famous Latin playwright born in Sarsina — transforms into the vibrant heart of the community, filled with music, gastronomy, shows, and popular devotion.
Saint Vicinius is the patron saint of Sarsina and the entire Diocese of Cesena-Sarsina. Tradition identifies him as the first bishop of the Sarsina Church, living between the 3rd and 4th centuries: a hermit on a mountain near the town, he was called to lead the Christian community of Romagna. His fame is linked to the famous collar (or chain) of Saint Vicinius, preserved in the Cathedral Basilica, which is still a destination for pilgrims seeking protection from evil and from physical and spiritual ailments.
The heart of the festival is the gastronomic stand managed by the Pro Loco of Sarsina, open every evening starting from 7 PM. Featuring piadina, traditional Romagna first courses, grilled meats, and local specialties, the square becomes a convivial gathering place for residents and visitors from the valley villages.
Each evening has its own character: concerts by local bands, vintage evenings with 1950s and 60s music and dancing, moments dedicated to ballroom dancing, town bands, and entertainment for all ages. The squares and streets of the historic center provide the backdrop for a program that combines live performances and popular Romagna traditions.
The climax is on August 28th, the patron saint's day: solemn masses in the Cathedral Basilica, presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese of Cesena-Sarsina, and a procession through the town streets mark the day. In the evening, in the square, music and dancing with an orchestra accompany the anticipation until the midnight fireworks, which beautifully conclude a week of celebration.
From August 22nd to 28th, 2026, Sarsina will once again celebrate its patron saint, Saint Vicinius, with a week of events in Piazza Plauto, organized by the Pro Loco of Sarsina. Every evening, from 7 PM, the gastronomic stand will be open, offering traditional Romagna dishes.
On August 28th, the saint's day, solemn masses and a procession are scheduled, followed in the evening by music and dancing with an orchestra and the traditional midnight fireworks.
The detailed evening program (concerts, themed evenings, and artist names) will be announced by the Pro Loco of Sarsina in the weeks leading up to the festival.
