About Saint Pantaleon Ravello

Every year on July 26th and 27th, Ravello gathers around its patron saint, Saint Pantaleon, for a festival that weaves together faith, music, and local tradition. Inside the Cathedral, before the Altar of the Precious Blood, the faithful await the miracle of the liquefaction of the Saint's blood; outside, in Piazza Duomo, the grand brass band concert accompanies morning and evening performances. The solemn procession through the village alleys and the fireworks display suspended over the sea conclude two days that capture the most authentic identity of Ravello, on the Amalfi Coast.

The patronal feast of Ravello

The Feast of Saint Pantaleon is the most cherished event of the year for the town of Ravello, in the Province of Salerno, Campania. It is celebrated on July 26th and 27th, when the small village overlooking the Amalfi Coast pauses its daily life to dedicate itself entirely to the physician and martyr of Nicomedia, the city's patron saint. This is not an event manufactured for tourism: it is a collective liturgy that the Ravello community has repeated for centuries, welcoming outsiders without ever losing its deeply popular and religious character.

The miracle of the liquefaction of the blood

The most anticipated moment is the miracle of the liquefaction of the blood of Saint Pantaleon. The relic, kept in an ampoule in the Baroque chapel of the Cathedral—the Altar of the Precious Blood—is said by local tradition to liquefy every July 27th. The faithful gather around the altar, singing traditional hymns and waiting for the sign: the liquefaction is interpreted as a favorable omen for the community, while its absence is seen as a harbinger of difficult times.

Legend has it that the ampoule arrived in Ravello by sea. Merchants and sailors from the Coast reportedly received it from a Christian woman in Nicaea; caught in a storm, they landed at Marmorata, on the Ravello coast, where the local priests solemnly received the relic. Since then, the cult has never been interrupted, so much so that Saint Pantaleon is venerated elsewhere as well: in 2025, the Bishop of Crema, a city that shares the same patron saint, presided over the Ravello celebrations.

Music, brass bands, and fireworks

Ravello is the City of Music, and the festival confirms it. Starting at 8:30 AM on July 26th, the "Città di Ailano" Historic Grand Brass Band, conducted by Maestro Giovanni Minafra, opens the festivities with symphonic marches in Piazza Duomo and along the streets of the center. This is followed by a midday matinée and evening concerts, featuring the most beloved symphonic and operatic pieces of the Italian repertoire: a true open-air lyrical-symphonic program, performed beneath the medieval facades of the square.

On the evening of July 27th, after the procession, the sky above the Coast lights up with a grand fireworks display, one of the most spectacular in the area precisely because of Ravello's position, suspended over three hundred meters above the sea. The final concert by the band closes the festival late at night.

The two days

  • July 26th — morning brass band opening, matinée, tribute to the War Memorial, exposition of the Saint's statue, and solemn vespers of the vigil, evening concert in Piazza Duomo.
  • July 27th — community holy masses, solemn Pontifical Mass presided over by the Archbishop of Amalfi-Cava de' Tirreni, evening mass, procession with the patron saint's statue through the city streets, fireworks, and final lyrical-symphonic program.

Ravello, between the Cathedral and gardens

The festival is also the best opportunity to discover the village away from the usual tourist circuits. The Cathedral, a former basilica dedicated to Saint Mary of the Assumption and Saint Pantaleon, preserves the famous 13th-century pulpit by Nicola di Bartolomeo da Foggia; a few steps away are Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone, with their viewpoints over the Gulf of Salerno. During these same weeks, the Ravello calendar is also animated by the summer concert season, making July the most intense month of the year.

Tips for visitors

  • The celebrations are free and open to everyone: no tickets are required.
  • Piazza Duomo fills up well before the procession and fireworks: it is advisable to arrive early.
  • The Cathedral is a place of worship: during masses and the moment of liquefaction, appropriate clothing and behavior are required.
  • On the day of the festival, the Municipality of Ravello implements traffic changes and special shuttle buses from the hamlets.
