The patronal feast of Sarno, from the Sanctuary of the Tre Corone to the Co-Cathedral of Episcopio
In Sarno, a town in the province of Salerno, Campania, the patronal feast of Saint Michael the Archangel is more than just a date on the liturgical calendar: it is the moment when the entire community finds its identity in the figure of the Prince of the Heavenly Hosts. Saint Michael is the patron saint of the city and co-patron of the Diocese of Nocera Inferiore-Sarno, venerated as the guardian of the Church against evil; his name, from Hebrew, literally means "Who is like God?". It is a deeply southern cult, which radiates from the Gargano region and has left churches, place names, and popular devotions passed down through generations across the Nocera-Sarno valley.
The universal calendar commemorates the Archangels on September 29th, but in Sarno, the main feast is celebrated on May 8th, the date tradition associates with the Archangel's apparition. The solemnity thus falls on the eve of May 9th, the feast of Saint Priscus, the current diocesan patron: two consecutive anniversaries that beautifully illustrate the religious layers of this territory. Those arriving in Sarno expecting festivities at the end of September will be surprised: here, the city dresses up for the feast in the heart of spring.
The days leading up to the solemnity follow an ancient rhythm. The novena accompanies the community with traditional hymns, while the solemn triduum alternates morning mass at the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi with the evening Holy Rosary at the Sanctuary of the Tre Corone, followed by the Triduum Prayer and Holy Mass. In recent years, the Angel's Vigil has become a permanent fixture in the program, an event that weaves together prayer, music, and adoration, appealing to both the elderly and the younger members of the parish.
The most anticipated moment is the great procession on May 8th. In the late afternoon, the statue of Saint Michael leaves the Sanctuary of Maria Santissima delle Tre Corone and travels through the city centerโvia Cavour, Corso Umberto I, via Matteotti, the Town Hall square, via Garibaldi, viale Margherita, and via Duomoโto reach the Co-Cathedral of Saint Michael in Episcopio, where the solemn mass is celebrated. The streets fill up, balconies are decorated, and the band accompanies the Archangel's passage: this is the most authentic side of Sarno, where people gather in the streets without needing an invitation.
The following Sunday, the statue makes the return journey, with the return procession from the Co-Cathedral to the Sanctuary, which ideally closes the cycle of festivities.
The place where it all begins is worth a visit even outside the feast days. The Sanctuary originated from a chapel built in 1640 in the Capo d'Orto area, replaced in 1691 by a church dedicated to Saint Mary of the Suffrage. Its spiritual heart is the painting created in 1776 by the Neapolitan artist Paolo De Maio: according to tradition, the artist fell into ecstasy several times before his own work, which was later completed with gold leaf details. After the eruption of Vesuvius in 1779 and a typhus epidemic, the Madonna of the Three Crowns (Tre Corone) was proclaimed patroness of Sarno. The church became a parish in 1967 and a diocesan sanctuary in 1973, and it also houses the statue of the ancient diocesan patron.
The feast of Saint Michael the Archangel is free to attend at all times: no tickets or reservations are required. It is one of those occasions where a town in inland Campania reveals itself without tourist filters, amidst rigorous religious rites and street-level social life that continues until evening. Those who want to experience it at its best should arrive a little early for the procession: finding a spot along the route at the last minute is not easy.
The 2026 edition of the patronal feast of Sarno took place from Wednesday, May 6th to Sunday, May 10th, with faith, music, and tradition. The solemn triduum opened the festivities between the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi, for morning mass, and the Sanctuary of Maria Santissima delle Tre Corone, where the Holy Rosary, Triduum Prayer, and Holy Mass were held each evening.
On Friday, May 8th, the 11:00 AM solemn mass and the traditional Supplication to the Virgin of Pompeii recited at noon marked the morning. At 6:00 PM, the statue of Saint Michael left the Sanctuary of the Tre Corone, traveling through the city center to the Co-Cathedral of Saint Michael in Episcopio, where the solemn mass was celebrated at 7:30 PM.
Due to public order reasons related to a Sarnese football match scheduled for Sunday, May 10th, the return procession was moved to Sunday, May 17th at 6:30 PM, from the Co-Cathedral of Episcopio to the Sanctuary. A decision shared between the parish and local authorities that did not diminish the participation of the faithful.
