About Saint John the Baptist

Every June 24th, Villafranca Sicula, a small village in the province of Agrigento, celebrates Saint John the Baptist with one of the most heartfelt traditions on the local calendar. The festival centers around the church dedicated to the Saint: a solemn Holy Mass is held in the late afternoon, followed by the traditional procession through the village streets, drawing the entire community together in a spirit of faith and shared devotion. Highlights include the typical sangiuvannuzzu pastry and the spectacular rigattiate accompanied by a brass band, culminating in a grand fireworks display.

The Patronal Feast of Villafranca Sicula

On June 24th, the town of Villafranca Siculaโ€”a small community of about 1,400 residents nestled at the foot of Mount San Calogero in the province of Agrigento (Sicily)โ€”unites to honor Saint John the Baptist. It is one of the most anticipated occasions of the year, deeply rooted in the popular devotion and identity of this village, located in the valley carved by the Sosio-Verdura river.

The Day of June 24th

The festival revolves entirely around the church dedicated to the Saint. In the late afternoon, a solemn Holy Mass is celebrated, serving as the focal point of the day. This is followed by the traditional procession, where the statue of the Saint is carried through the village streets. The parade involves the entire community in an atmosphere of reverence and celebration, with devotees accompanying the statue amidst prayers, hymns, and the essential sounds of the local brass band.

The Rigattiate and the Two Factions

One of the most spectacular and defining elements of the local tradition are the rigattiate: a form of ritual competition where the statues of the Saints are carried on shoulders, made to run, spin, and "fly" through streets and squares to the fast-paced rhythm of the band. The village's religious life is marked by two historic factions: the sangiuvannara, devotees of Saint John the Baptist who wear red, and the sammichilara, devotees of Saint Michael the Archangel who wear blue. This affectionate rivalry, which finds its peak during the summer celebrations of Maria SS. del Mirto, also enlivens the June 24th festivities.

The Traditional Pastry: Sangiuvannuzzu

The festival is tied to a traditional sweet known as sangiuvannuzzu, prepared specifically for the occasion: a biscuit shaped like the Saint and covered in a sugar glaze colored red with mulberry juice. It is a small masterpiece of popular confectionery that tells the story of the village's ancient bond with its patron through its unique flavors.

Fireworks

The day concludes with a pyrotechnic display that illuminates the sky over Villafranca Sicula. The town's passion for fireworks is renowned throughout Sicily: the pyrotechnic firms hired by the two factions compete in magnificence and creativity, gifting the community and visitors a spectacle that brings the Saint's feast to a brilliant close.

A Heritage of Tradition

The Feast of Saint John the Baptist is organized with the support of the Saint John the Baptist Association of Villafranca Sicula and represents a precious opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the Agrigento hinterland, where faith, folk traditions, and conviviality merge into an intense and participatory day of celebration.
