The feast of the co-patron of Troia, protector of the sick and nurses
Every year on March 8th, the town of Troia gathers around the figure of Saint John of God, co-patron of the city and venerated throughout Christendom as the protector of the sick, hospitals, and the nursing profession. The date coincides with the dies natalis of the saint, founder of the Hospitaller Order of the Brothers of Saint John of God, and represents one of the most heartfelt moments in the religious calendar of this village in the Monti Dauni, in the province of Foggia, in the Puglia region.
Troia's bond with Saint John of God is rooted in an ancient devotion, guarded and nurtured from generation to generation. The cult reaches its peak during the week preceding March 8th: at the end of February, an initial procession accompanies the transfer of the forearm reliquary and the statue of the saint from the small church dedicated to him to the majestic Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, famous throughout Europe for its splendid eleven-spoke rose window. For the entire week, the reliquary and statue remain exposed for the veneration of the faithful, while Eucharistic celebrations, moments of prayer, and meetings with confraternities, students, and volunteers from charitable associations take place.
The highlight is the solemn Eucharistic Celebration presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese of Lucera-Troia. At the end of the Mass, at noon, the procession sets off from the Cathedral: the forearm reliquary precedes the statue of the saint, followed by the brothers of the "Torch of Charity of Saint John of God". The procession winds slowly through the main streets of the town center, with the heartfelt participation of the community, before returning to the Cathedral.
Portuguese by birth and Spanish by adoption, John of God (1495-1550) dedicated his life to assisting the poor and the sick, founding in Granada the work that would become the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God. Proclaimed patron of hospitals and nurses, his figure still recalls the values of care, hospitality, and service to the least, themes that find an occasion for reflection and renewed solidarity in the festival in Troia.
The Feast of Saint John of God is not just a liturgical appointment, but a moment of strong collective identity for the entire Troian community. Around the Cathedral and the streets of the village, one can breathe the intimate and authentic atmosphere of the great Apulian devotions, where religious tradition blends with the sense of belonging and solidarity that characterizes the small towns of the Monti Dauni.
On Sunday, March 8, 2026, Troia celebrated its co-patron Saint John of God according to the centuries-old tradition of the Troian cult. During the preceding week, after the transfer of the forearm reliquary and the statue from the small church dedicated to the saint to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the faithful gathered in prayer around the sacred effigies.
On the day of the feast, the solemn Eucharistic Celebration was presided over by Monsignor Giuseppe Giuliano, Bishop of the Diocese of Lucera-Troia. At the end of the Mass, the procession began: the reliquary, preceded by the brothers of the "Torch of Charity of Saint John of God", and the statue of the saint crossed the streets of the historic center, amidst the participation of the community, before returning to the Cathedral.
The program follows the established tradition of the Troian cult:

The celebrations take place in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and along the streets of the historic center of Troia. The procession departs from the Cathedral at noon on March 8th.
