The patronal festival of Bassano Romano

In August, the town of Bassano Romano, a village in the Viterbo Tuscia region of Lazio, pauses to honor its patron saints: Saint Gratiliano and Saint Luciano. For three days, from August 11 to 13, the streets of the historic center fill with devotion, music, and joy, marking one of the most anticipated events of the summer. The festival blends religious observance with civic and popular celebration, involving the entire community and the many locals who return from across Italy and abroad for the occasion.

Devotion and the relic of Saint Gratiliano

The spiritual heart of the festival is the solemn procession that kicks off the festivities. Following Holy Mass, the procession carries the precious relic of Saint Gratiliano—his silver-plated head—in triumph through the village streets, where it is venerated by the faithful. Accompanied by the town band, local brotherhoods, and the participation of the youth, the procession winds through the historic center to the church dedicated to the martyr, creating an atmosphere of reflection and community that has been passed down for generations.

Music, shows, and community

Alongside the liturgical events, the program features concerts, performances, and entertainment for all ages. The "Città de Bassano Romano" town band provides the soundtrack for evening concerts, while the traditional bingo in the square brings young and old together. Evenings feature pop music concerts and comedy shows, often with free admission, held in the public park and outdoor spaces. The celebration concludes with fireworks that light up the Tuscia sky to the notes of the hymn to Saint Gratiliano.

A festival for the little ones

One day is dedicated to children and teenagers, with parties, entertainment, and the presentation of certificates to participants of summer camps and youth educational projects linked to the patron saint. It is the community's way of passing the meaning and value of their roots to the new generation.
