The patronal solemnity of February 9th featuring the traditional bonfire on Corso Dante
The Feast of Saint Corrado is the most cherished celebration in Molfetta, a seaside town in the Metropolitan City of Bari, Apulia. Saint Corrado of Bavaria, a noble pilgrim who lived in the 12th century, is venerated as the patron saint of the city and the entire Diocese of Molfetta-Ruvo-Giovinazzo-Terlizzi. His relics, kept in the Cathedral, are the focus of a centuries-old devotion that every year on February 9th draws thousands of faithful and curious visitors to the streets for the winter edition of the festivities.
The liturgical calendar begins with the enthronement of the reliquary bust of Saint Corrado and continues with the preparatory novena in the Cathedral, marked by the Angelus, Holy Masses, and the Holy Rosary. On the day of the solemnity, February 9th, several Holy Masses are celebrated throughout the day, culminating in the solemn evening Pontifical Mass presided over by the Archbishop, in the presence of the clergy, civil and military authorities, and local confraternities.
The most anticipated and spectacular moment is the lighting of the large traditional bonfire on Corso Dante, which takes place in the evening, immediately after the Pontifical Mass. The entire Molfetta community gathers around the flames, while the traditional hot air balloon rises into the sky. It is an ancient ritual, a symbol of light and rebirth in the heart of winter, accompanied by the music of the Bassa Musica and local marching bands.
The festival also comes alive with sound: the diana fireworks at dawn, the parades through the city by the Bassa Musica "Città di Molfetta", the concerts of the "Santa Cecilia" Grand Band, and the sacred singing of the Cappella Musicale Corradiana. The illuminations light up the historic center and the main streets, creating the typical atmosphere of the great Apulian patronal festivals.
Organized by the Molfetta Patronal Festival Committee together with the diocesan community, the winter edition of the Feast of Saint Corrado unites faith, folklore, and civic identity. For those visiting Apulia in winter, it represents an authentic opportunity to discover the maritime and devotional traditions of Molfetta, far from the large summer tourist crowds.
The 2026 edition of the winter festivities in honor of Saint Corrado, patron saint of Molfetta, was organized by the Patronal Festival Committee with a rich religious and civil calendar.
After the enthronement of the reliquary bust on January 30th and the preparatory novena, the solemnity of February 9th featured morning Holy Masses, the parade of the "Città di Molfetta" Bassa Musica through the city streets, and the solemn evening Pontifical Mass presided over by Monsignor Domenico Cornacchia. In the evening, on Corso Dante, the lighting of the great traditional bonfire, the release of the hot air balloon, and the music of the Bassa Musica and the "Santa Cecilia" Grand Band concluded the day of celebration.
Molfetta can be reached by train on the Adriatic line (Molfetta station) and by car via the SS16 Adriatic road, Molfetta exit, about 25 km north of Bari. The nearest airport is the Bari-Palese "Karol Wojtyła" Airport.
Religious celebrations are held in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (Duomo), while the traditional bonfire is set up on Corso Dante, in the city center.
All celebrations and events in the square are free and open to the public.
