Bovino's autumn patronal feast: a blend of faith, military fanfares, and the flavors of the Monti Dauni
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Feast of Saint Celestine the Martyr, accompanied by the "Autumn Flavors" Festival, is one of the most cherished events in the calendar of Bovino, an ancient town perched on the southern Monti Dauni overlooking the Cervaro Valley in the province of Foggia (Capitanata), in the heart of Puglia. Every year, on the second weekend of October, the village fills with devotees, curious onlookers, and visitors for two days that weave together faith, tradition, music, and seasonal gastronomy.
Tradition remembers Saint Celestine as a Roman soldier martyred during the early centuries of Christianity due to his conversion. His remains are kept and venerated in Bovino, within the evocative 19th-century Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, and he is considered one of the city's patron saints alongside the venerated image of the Madonna delle Grazie. Over the centuries, a festival has grown around this devotion, uniting the entire Bovino community and the many emigrants who return home for the occasion.
The first evening is dedicated to the "Autumn Flavors" Festival, which winds through the alleys and squares of the old town, transforming it into a culinary journey. Stalls offer seasonal specialties and traditional farming products from the Monti Dauni:
The event has an eco-friendly focus ("ecofesta") and includes a gluten-free station, making the festival accessible to everyone. A portion of the proceeds is donated to charity, confirming the spirit of solidarity that drives the organizing committee.
The highlight is Sunday, featuring the religious rite and the solemn procession of the statue and reliquary of Saint Celestine through the town center, accompanied by civil and religious authorities. One of the most characteristic elements is the arrival of the Bersaglieri fanfare, with the flag-raising ceremony, the parade at a run along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, and the traditional afternoon concert. The festival concludes with a fireworks display that illuminates the sky above the village.
Awarded the Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club and included among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, Bovino offers visitors a remarkably evocative historic center, featuring the Cathedral, the Ducal Castle, and a maze of medieval alleys. During the event, guided tours of the old town, museums, and monuments are often organized, frequently curated by local students.
The festival is promoted by the San Celestino Bovino Festival Committee together with the Pro Loco Bovino, the Confraternity of the Good Death, and the National Bersaglieri Association, with the support of the Municipality of Bovino and in collaboration with tourism entities of the Monti Dauni.
The San Celestino Bovino Festival Committee, together with the Pro Loco and the Confraternity of the Good Death, has not yet released the dates and program for the 2026 edition. In line with custom, the festival is expected to take place on the second weekend of October, with the "Autumn Flavors" Festival on Saturday evening and religious rites, the procession, and the Bersaglieri fanfare on Sunday. As soon as the official calendar is announced, this page will be updated with dates, times, and program details.
