The great bonfire, traditional house-to-house singing, and a community dinner in the village of Fontecchio
The Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot is one of the most iconic events in the calendar of Fontecchio, a small village of about 400 inhabitants nestled in the Aterno Valley, just minutes from L'Aquila, in Abruzzo. Recognized as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy and set within the Sirente Velino Regional Park, Fontecchio preserves its medieval fortified layout, complete with entrance gates, stretches of walls, towers, and the famous Clock Tower. It is in this setting, particularly in the evocative Piazza del Popolo with its 14th-century fountain featuring lion masks, that the festival dedicated to the hermit saint and protector of domestic animals comes to life every year.
Saint Anthony the Abbot (251-356 AD) is among the most venerated saints in the mountain villages of Abruzzo, where his cult has been intertwined for centuries with fire rituals and pastoral life. The great bonfire, the central element of the festival, evokes both the symbolism of the solstice fire and the saint's protection over animals and harvests. In Fontecchio, as in other towns in the L'Aquila area, the January 17th celebration remains a moment of strong community participation, keeping alive a heritage of religious and folk traditions passed down from generation to generation.
The festival begins in the morning, when a paranza (group) of local women walks through the village streets, singing traditional songs from house to house, following a custom of begging and well-wishing that involves the entire community. In the late afternoon, Holy Mass is celebrated, followed by the most anticipated moment: the lighting of the great bonfire in Piazza del Popolo. Residents and visitors gather around the fire amidst music and singing, while the villagers prepare a community dinner with soup and slow-cooked veal sandwiches with vegetables.
Experiencing the Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot in Fontecchio means connecting with the most genuine side of Abruzzo: that of mountain villages, vigils around the fire, and shared tables. The event, which is free to attend and organized with the participation of the Municipality of Fontecchio and its residents, is the ideal opportunity to discover the village in the silence of winter, among medieval alleys, the ancient fountain, and the Clock Tower, in the heart of the province of L'Aquila.
