The blessing of the animals and the votive bonfire at the Mater Domini Sanctuary
In the heart of the Brindisi Salento, every January 17th, the town of Mesagne (province of Brindisi, Apulia) renews one of its most heartfelt devotions: the Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot, celebrated at the Mater Domini Sanctuary Parish. It is an occasion that weaves together faith, rural tradition, and popular conviviality, attracting faithful and families from Mesagne and neighboring towns every year.
Saint Anthony the Abbot, a hermit who lived between the 3rd and 4th centuries, is venerated as the patron saint of pets and livestock. His figure is deeply linked to the agricultural and pastoral world: for this reason, on his feast day, the faithful bring their animals before the church to receive his blessing. Fire is the other great symbol of the saint, recalled by the bonfire that concludes the day.
The most anticipated and evocative moment is the blessing of the animals, which takes place in the sanctuary square. Dogs, cats, horses, and farm animals are brought by their owners to receive the traditional blessing, in a ritual that combines spirituality and affection for the animal world, rooted in the local rural culture.
As per tradition, the votive bonfire is lit in the evening, a symbol of purification and hope for the new agricultural year. Around the fire, the community gathers for the 'pettolata': the tasting of hot pettole, typical Apulian fritters, accompanied by music and entertainment. It is the moment when the religious dimension gives way to a festive and convivial atmosphere.
The Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot at the Mater Domini Sanctuary is much more than a religious recurrence: it is a meeting point that keeps the cultural roots of Mesagne and the province of Brindisi alive. The invitation is extended to all citizens and neighboring towns, in a climate of devotion and celebration that renews the city's identity every year.
The 2026 Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot took place on Saturday, January 17, at the Mater Domini Sanctuary Parish in Mesagne. The traditional program was confirmed, featuring the solemn Holy Mass, the blessing of the animals in the square, the lighting of the votive bonfire, and the 'pettolata' with music and conviviality.

Mesagne can be reached by car via the SS7 Appia (Mesagne exit) and the Brindisi-Taranto highway. The Mesagne train station is served by the Brindisi-Taranto regional line; the nearest airport is Brindisi-Salento, about 15 km away.
The blessing of the animals takes place in the outdoor square of the church: for pets, a leash or carrier is recommended. In January, evening temperatures are cold; appropriate clothing is advised for attending the outdoor bonfire.
