The patronal feast of Favara in the heart of the historic center
June 13th is a date etched into the calendar of Favara, a populous town in the province of Agrigento, Sicily: it is the day the city celebrates its Patron Saint, Saint Anthony of Padua. The Feast of Saint Anthony is much more than a liturgical anniversary; it is a defining community event that brings entire families together around an ancient devotion, rediscovered in recent years with renewed vigor by the entire Favara community.
The festivities unfold throughout the day on June 13th, marked by Eucharistic celebrations at the Mother Church. In the late afternoon, the religious procession begins with the statue of the Saint, winding through the historic center accompanied by the notes of the historic Giuseppe Lentini marching band of Favara. The solemn evening Eucharistic celebration at the Mother Church culminates in the act of entrusting the city to the Patron Saint, a symbolic gesture that renews the deep bond between the town and Saint Anthony, an example of charity, hope, and obedience.
Among the most characteristic rites is the traditional blessing of Saint Anthony's votive bread, an ancient sign of charity and sharing linked to the figure of the Saint of the poor. The procession concludes in the town squares, where popular faith and tradition intertwine in a collected and festive atmosphere, under the gaze of the many Favara residents who bear the name Antonio.
Alongside the religious dimension, the feast also offers opportunities for conviviality that enliven the city squares: tastings of local products, such as pane cunzato, and entertainment with Sicilian comedians turn the evening into a celebration for all ages. The Feast of Saint Anthony thus confirms its dual soul, sacred and popular, and represents one of the most heartfelt events of the Favara summer.
Nestled among the hills of the Agrigento hinterland, Favara is known for its cultural dynamism and its proximity to the Valley of the Temples. The patronal feast offers the perfect opportunity to discover the historic center, its churches, and the hospitality of a community that lives its roots and devotion with intensity.
