Every year on January 17th, Cervara di Roma gathers for one of its oldest and most cherished traditions: the Feast of Saint Anthony Abbot, the Egyptian hermit considered the father of Christian monasticism and venerated as the protector of pets and livestock. In this village in the Simbruini Mountains, the highest in the province of Rome and known as the "artists' village," popular devotion intertwines with rural folklore in a day that marks the heart of winter.

Fire, processions, and blessings

The symbolic highlight of the festival is the great bonfire, lit in the main square according to a custom widespread throughout the Lazio region. The fire of Saint Anthony represents protection against illness and fire, and many locals take home some embers as a sign of devotion. Throughout the day, a procession winds through the historic center with the statue of the saint, followed by the blessing of domestic animals and agricultural products—a gesture that renews the centuries-old bond between the community and the land.
