The midsummer festival in Poggio Sannita, between devotion and popular games
On August 16th, in the middle of summer, Poggio Sannita celebrates Saint Roch, the pilgrim saint most venerated in the villages of Central-Southern Italy. The festival, in the municipality of the province of Isernia once called Caccavone, combines the religious dimension with the popular games that have always accompanied this recurrence, in an atmosphere of joy and community gathering.
The festival falls in the period of the year when the village is most lively, with the return of emigrants and the arrival of visitors curious to discover the famous Babaci — life-sized figures made from recycled materials that have populated alleys and squares since 2021, depicting scenes of daily life. Saint Roch thus becomes one of the events that mark the Poggio Sannita summer.
Like any self-respecting Molise festival, the Saint Roch festival is also an occasion to gather around the flavors of the territory: from scherpelle, the village's typical dessert, to the traditional dishes of Alto Molise peasant cuisine. A genuine opportunity to experience an authentic village, far from the routes of mass tourism.
For August 16, 2026, Poggio Sannita renews the festival in honor of Saint Roch, with the religious rites and traditional popular games that characterize the day. The details of the program will be announced locally in the days preceding.
Program coming soon. The festival traditionally includes the religious celebration in honor of Saint Roch and popular games for the village. Specific dates and times for August 16, 2026 will be communicated by the parish and municipality.
Poggio Sannita can be reached by car in the Alto Molise area, in the province of Isernia.
The Saint Roch festival is celebrated on August 16th, with popular games. Free admission.
