About FAI Spring Days

The FAI Spring Days return to San Giorgio Piacentino, in the province of Piacenza, with the extraordinary opening of three jewels of the village: the medieval Castle, the 17th-century Fortress, and the Church of San Giorgio Martire. A weekend in March to discover places usually not easily accessible, accompanied by explanations from FAI volunteers, featuring medieval dances, photographic exhibitions, and a gastronomic snack by the Pro Loco. Admission is by free contribution, to support the protection of Italian heritage.

FAI Spring Days in San Giorgio Piacentino

The FAI Spring Days are the main public event dedicated to Italy's cultural and landscape heritage. Organized by the FAI - Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano (Italian National Trust) since 1993, every year hundreds of art, history, and nature sites, often little-known or usually inaccessible, are opened to the public. In San Giorgio Piacentino, a town in Emilia-Romagna in the heart of the Piacenza plain, the initiative offers an itinerary through the monuments that tell the story of the village.

The sites open in the village

The route revolves around three heritage sites in the historic center, accompanied by guided tours from volunteers and Apprentice Dragons:

  • San Giorgio Castle (Piazza del Torrione 4): a fortification of medieval origin, with the first evidence dating back to the 10th century, today the seat of the Municipality and the civic heart of the town.
  • San Giorgio Fortress (Via Conciliazione 3): an elegant noble residence built in the 17th century and enriched in subsequent centuries with elements of neoclassical taste.
  • Church of San Giorgio Martire (Via Conciliazione 6): a building of ancient origins, now the result of a significant Baroque reconstruction in the 17th century, flanked by the imposing 14th-century bell tower made of stone and brick, the last vestige of the Romanesque structure.

Events and entertainment

The visit to the monuments is enriched by collateral initiatives curated together with local associations. Among the most anticipated events are the medieval dance performance on Sunday afternoon, reserved for those visiting the Castle, the photographic exhibition dedicated to the village's memory ("San Giorgio yesterday and today") set up along the route, and the gastronomic snack offered by the Pro Loco in front of the church, a convivial occasion to taste local products.

A weekend for heritage

The FAI Spring Days invite you to rediscover the identity of a territory through its symbolic buildings. In San Giorgio Piacentino, in the province of Piacenza, the event combines the protection of historical assets with the valorization of community traditions, in a weekend that involves families, history enthusiasts, and the curious. Admission is by free contribution: every donation supports FAI's activities for the conservation of Italy's artistic and environmental heritage.
