Extraordinary openings of Moretta's heritage with FAI
Every spring, the FAI (National Trust for Italy) opens hundreds of extraordinary sites across Italy to the public, and Moretta, a town in the Province of Cuneo in the heart of the Piedmontese plains, is a key participant in this major national event. For an entire weekend, palaces, churches, archives, and historic residences that are usually closed to the public open their doors, thanks to the efforts of the FAI Saluzzo Delegation, the Savigliano Territorial Group, and the Youth Group.
The route winds through the historic center of Moretta, featuring the Town Hall and its Council Chamber, the 18th-century Palazzo Pignatta on Via Balbis, the exterior of the medieval castle, and the former home of Giovanbattista Balbis. The heart of the visit is the Sanctuary of the Beata Vergine del Pilone, a splendid example of Piedmontese Baroque: the church, the 17th-century bell tower, the sacristy with its ex-votos, and the guesthouse with its elegant portico. FAI members enjoy exclusive access to the Sanctuary's Historical Archive, containing documents dating from the 17th to the 20th century, as well as the ancient library.
As with all FAI Days, visits are led by volunteers and 'Apprendisti Ciceroni'โlocal students specifically trained to share the wonders of cultural heritage with visitors. This is one of the most beautiful aspects of the initiative: the dialogue between generations centered on the history of their community.
The FAI Spring Days are the perfect opportunity to discover an unseen side of Moretta, far from the crowds, and to provide concrete support for the protection of Italy's heritage. Admission is by voluntary contribution, and every donation helps FAI continue its mission. It is a weekend of culture, beauty, and identity in the most authentic Piedmont, between the Province of Cuneo and the evocative landscapes of the Saluzzo plains.
Moretta, a town of ancient origins overlooking the banks of the Po, guards an architectural and religious heritage that deserves to be rediscovered: the FAI Days offer the key to crossing thresholds that are otherwise closed and to reading, through palaces, churches, and archives, centuries of Piedmontese history. An event awaited every year by art lovers, families, and the curious, making this village in the 'Granda' a small but great protagonist of the Italian cultural spring.
The 2026 edition of the FAI Spring Days in Moretta, in the Province of Cuneo, took place on Saturday, March 21, and Sunday, March 22, as part of the 34th national edition of the FAI initiative. The route combined the village's historic center and the Baroque Sanctuary of the Beata Vergine del Pilone, with exclusive access for FAI members to the Sanctuary's Historical Archive and its four historical land registers. Despite the unseasonably cool weather, the event saw a large public turnout.
