About Euro Mediterranean Festival

Since 2001, the Euro Mediterranean Festival has brought opera, symphonic music, ballet, and theatre to the most evocative archaeological sites in Rome and across Italy. Founded by director and set designer Enrico Castiglione, it takes place every June in the Nymphaeum of Villa dei Quintili along the Appia Antica, featuring evening concerts at 9:00 PM under imperial ruins. It is a unique event blending archaeology and live performance, held under the High Patronage of the President of the Italian Republic and the European Parliament.

A festival where archaeology becomes the stage

The Euro Mediterranean Festival is one of the longest-running and most recognizable live performance events in the Capital. Founded in 2001 by director and set designer Enrico Castiglione, it has built its identity on a simple yet powerful concept: returning great archaeological sites to their original function as performance venues. For over twenty years, opera, symphonic concerts, piano recitals, ballet, and theatre have been staged among Roman columns, nymphaea, and ancient walls in the city of Rome and other Italian monumental sites.

The Nymphaeum of Villa dei Quintili, the heart of the festival

The main venue is the Nymphaeum of Villa dei Quintili, located within the Appia Antica Archaeological Park along the Via Appia Nuova. This is one of the most opulent suburban residences of ancient Rome, confiscated by Emperor Commodus in the 2nd century AD. Attending a concert here at sunset, with the audience seated before the villa's ruins and the Roman countryside stretching out behind, is an experience hard to replicate elsewhere. Shows typically begin at 9:00 PM, when the light fades and the stage lighting highlights the ancient structures.

A program between the classical and the contemporary

The schedule alternates between different repertoires, with a distinctly Mediterranean and European vocation. Recent editions have featured programs dedicated to Roman and Venetian Baroque, 20th-century Spanish and Italian music, gala opera, tango, and film scores, as well as musical theatre productions and symphonic storytelling for families. Some recurring titles illustrate the variety:

  • Symphonic concerts with guest orchestras and the Euro Mediterranean Festival Orchestra;
  • Opera galas featuring arias by Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi, Mascagni, and Puccini;
  • Piano recitals by Italian and international soloists;
  • Baroque music with ensembles specializing in Vivaldi, Marcello, Galuppi, and Lully;
  • Shows for younger audiences, such as Prokofiev's musical fairy tales.

Awards and institutional support

Over the years, the Festival has been held under the High Patronage of the President of the Italian Republic and the President of the European Parliament, with the support of the Ministry of Culture. For the 2026-2028 three-year period, the Euro Mediterranean Festival Association is among the entities funded by the Lazio Region as part of its live performance initiatives, confirming the role the festival plays in the regional cultural system.

Why it is worth visiting

Compared to large summer arenas, the Euro Mediterranean Festival offers a more intimate dimension: limited capacity, close-up listening, and a direct relationship between music and the archaeological landscape. For those visiting Rome in June, it is also an opportunity to discover the Appia Antica in the eveningโ€”a stretch of the city that is usually explored on foot or by bike during the day among Roman tombs, original paving stones, and aqueducts. The formula is equally popular with Romans and foreign visitors, who find here a rare synthesis of heritage and live performance.

Beyond Rome

Throughout its history, the Festival has also brought its productions to other Italian archaeological sites, from the Great Baths of Villa Adriana in Tivoli to the Ancient Theatre of Taormina, and the Roman Theatre of Ostia Antica: a circuit that has given the festival a national and Mediterranean reach consistent with its name.
