Two nights of world music, folk, and Sannio flavors at Cascina Panari
The Etnofestival «World Music» is one of the longest-running musical events in the Benevento Sannio region. For over twenty years, it has brought artists who blend traditional folk with contemporary sounds to Buonalbergo, a small town of a few thousand inhabitants in the province of Benevento, Campania. It is not a mass-market festival; rather, it is a musical exploration combined with the promotion of the territory and high-quality Southern Italian products.
The formula has been refined over time: two nights in late July or early August, an open-air stage, four concert groups, and DJ sets that keep the audience dancing until the first light of dawn. The programming has evolved over the years, alternating between world music, folk revival, Balkan and Gypsy sounds, Brazilian samba, ska, funk, and electronic music.
The adventure began in 2000 under the name Acqua e musica (Water and Music), a small festival linked to the town's fountains and springs. In 2002, it adopted its definitive name, Etnofestival, and began to establish itself as a fixed appointment of the Buonalbergo summer, managed by the Etnofestival Cultural Association together with the Pro Loco Buonalbergo.
In 2022, the festival found its current home: Cascina Panari, a rural structure on Via Sant'Antonio surrounded by countryside, which allowed for increased capacity and the addition of reception and dining areas. Since then, the Etnofestival has welcomed thousands of visitors while maintaining its intimate and convivial atmosphere. Past guests include nationally renowned projects—from Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino to Eusebio Martinelli & Gipsy Orkestar, from Radio Lausberg to Pellegrino—alongside emerging groups from the South.
Each edition features four live concerts and closing DJ sets. The performances follow several recurring themes:
All this takes place in an open-air setting: a lawn, a stage, essential lighting, and the surrounding Miscano countryside. Those who stay until the end traditionally watch the sunrise from the Cascina.
The culinary aspect is not just a side attraction. Every year, the organization pays great attention to food, creating a menu that tells the story of inland Campania: typical products from Sannio and the Miscano Valley, rustic recipes reinterpreted as street food, and local wines and beers. In the 2026 edition, for example, the signature dish was a crispy sandwich filled with shredded local chicken marinated in paprika and honey, served with seasonal peppers.
Buonalbergo is located at an altitude of about 555 meters on the slopes of Monte San Silvestro, along the ancient route of the Via Traiana that connected Benevento to Brindisi. The most precious monument in the town is the Ponte delle Chianche, the best-preserved Roman bridge on the entire Trajan route: inaugurated around 109 AD, it retains three of its six original arches and can be reached via an eight-kilometer hike from the town center. Also worth visiting is the Santuario della Madonna della Macchia, a destination for popular devotion, and the Palazzetto delle Arti Fortore Sannio at Palazzo Angelini. The festival is a perfect excuse for a weekend in the most authentic Sannio region: the Pro Loco itself organizes the Sagra de lo Ciammarruchiello in mid-August, recognized as a quality food festival.
The festival is promoted by the Etnofestival Cultural Association together with the Pro Loco Buonalbergo APS, with the patronage of UNPLI, the Municipality of Buonalbergo, and the Province of Benevento. The work is almost entirely voluntary: it is the local collaborators who build the stage, manage the kitchen, and handle hospitality every year.
For 2026, the Etnofestival «World Music» chose the slogan «Falling in love with Etnofestival» and an earlier calendar date compared to recent editions: not the first days of August, but Friday, July 24, and Saturday, July 25, 2026, still at Cascina Panari in Buonalbergo, in the Benevento Sannio.
The organizers spoke of a return to the «most essential and authentic formula»: two nights, six protagonists of the music scene, a stage immersed in greenery, and no concessions to spectacle for its own sake. The program featured Almaterra with Southern Italian folk music, Dutty Beagle with their sounds blending gipsy-punk, rumba, and ska, Molotov d'Irpinia with contemporary folk in the Irpinian dialect, and Anna and Vulkan, a project that blends Neapolitan singer-songwriter songs, nu-disco, psychedelic pop, and funk. Accompanying the nights were DJ sets by the Groove Agency.
Great space, as per tradition, was given to gastronomy: among the edition's offerings, a crispy sandwich filled with shredded local chicken marinated in paprika and honey, served with seasonal peppers, along with other local specialties. The festival, promoted by the Pro Loco Buonalbergo with the Etnofestival Cultural Association, was supported by the patronage of UNPLI, the Municipality of Buonalbergo, and the Province of Benevento.
For both nights: gastronomic area with local dishes and typical Sannio products, beverage stands, and open-air spaces in the Cascina Panari countryside.
Buonalbergo can be reached by car along the SS90 delle Puglie, which climbs from Benevento through the Miscano Valley towards the Fortore area. If coming from the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, the most convenient exit is Grottaminarda. The provincial capital, Benevento, is about thirty kilometers away and has a train station; from the city, connections to the town are provided by suburban bus lines, though service is limited on summer weekends, making a car the most practical solution. The festival takes place at Cascina Panari, on Via Sant'Antonio, just outside the town, with parking available in adjacent areas.
Admission terms are not published on official channels: it is advisable to check with the Pro Loco or on the Etnofestival social media profiles in the days leading up to the event. Food and drinks are available for purchase at local festival prices.
This is an evening and night event in the open countryside at an altitude of 555 meters: even in July, it is advisable to bring a sweatshirt. Wear comfortable shoes for the grass, and for those who want to combine it with a visit, the hike to the Ponte delle Chianche is best done in the cool morning hours. For accommodation, options are concentrated among farmhouses in the Miscano Valley, facilities in Benevento, and the Ariano Irpino area.
