The mountain bike race on Europe's highest active volcano
The Etna Marathon MTB is a landmark event for mountain biking in Southern Italy. It takes place in the municipality of Milo, a small village in the Catania area perched on the eastern slopes of Mount Etna, in the heart of Sicily. The start and finish are located in Piazza Belvedere, from where bikers set off on a loop that traverses the most iconic landscapes of Etna Park: lunar-like lava fields, ancient millennial pine forests, and evocative single-track sections carved into volcanic rock.
The event is designed to welcome both competitive racers and enthusiasts. The program includes several categories:
The Etna Marathon is more than just a race: it is a weekend of sport and conviviality. Around Piazza Belvedere, the expo area comes to life, hosting bib collection, technical briefings, social gatherings with participants, and the unmissable final pasta party. A dedicated event for children is also planned, confirming the family-friendly and popular nature of the event.
The event is organized by the ASD Mongibello MTB Team, a historic local organization led by president Maurizio Scalia, based in Milo. Now reaching a significant milestone in its history, the Etna Marathon MTB has established itself over the years as a classic on the national calendar, successfully combining a passion for mountain biking with the discovery of one of Italy's most fascinating landscapes: Etna Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site and Europe's highest active volcano.
Cycling in the Etna Marathon means testing yourself against terrain unique in the world, amidst volcanic sand, forests, and panoramic views of the Ionian Sea. The setting of the town of Milo, with its hospitality and local flavors, completes an experience that goes beyond mere sporting competition to become a true journey into the heart of Sicily.
The 20th edition of the Etna Marathon MTB takes place over the weekend of September 26-27, 2026, with the competitive race scheduled for Sunday, September 27. The event, originally planned for June 7, 2026, was postponed to the autumn due to delays in receiving authorizations from the Etna Park Authority.
The start and finish remain in Piazza Belvedere in Milo, in the Catania area. The usual range of events is confirmed: Marathon, Gran Fondo, E-bike Ride, and the Etna Cycling Tour, a non-competitive ride on paved roads between Milo, Sant'Alfio, and Mascali.
Registration opened on January 20, 2026, on the official website, with fees tiered based on the date (starting from 35 euros for early birds). The fee includes a race pack, medical assistance, two aid stations on the course, lead and sweep vehicle service, and the Sunday pasta party.
Detailed schedules will be published on the official website in the days leading up to the event.
Milo can be reached by car from Catania (about 40 minutes) or from Giarre/Riposto by heading up towards Mount Etna. The nearest airport is Catania Fontanarossa. The start and finish are in Piazza Belvedere in Milo.

We recommend booking accommodation in the Etna towns (Milo, Sant'Alfio, Zafferana Etnea) well in advance. A helmet is mandatory and bikes must be in good working order: the routes include technical sections on volcanic terrain.
